LE01 – Understanding Image Formats and Resolutions (05 Dec 2023)

Part I. HANDS-ON PRACTICE: Perform the following instructions. (Points

allotted: 70/100)

Installing GIMP on Windows:

1. Visit the GIMP website:
2. In order to conserve Data allocation for HAG, the installer is locally hosted
and can be downloaded at ____________

3. Unzip the installer.

4. Choose the appropriate version for your Windows system (32-bit or 64-bit)
and click the download link. Save the installer file to your computer.

5. Run the installer: Locate the downloaded installer file (usually in your
Downloads folder) and double-click on it to run the installation.

6. Follow the installation wizard: The installation wizard will guide you through
the process. You can choose the components you want to install and the
installation location. Click "Next" and then "Install" to begin the installation.

7. Complete the installation: Once the installation is complete, you can launch
GIMP from the Start menu.

Working with Image Formats using GIMP

Objective: Convert an image from one format to another using GIMP.

Steps:
 Open GIMP:
 Launch GIMP on your computer.
 Open an Image: (Any JPG Image from your PC, make sure you have a
backup/original copy of this image and rename this image into “Original.jpg”.)
 Click on "File" in the menu.
 Select "Open" and choose an image file (for example, a JPEG image).

Save As Different Formats:

 After opening the image, click on "File" again.

 Select "Export As" or "Export" (depending on your GIMP version).

 Choose a different format (Use PNG) from the list.
 Click "Export" and adjust format-specific settings if necessary.
 Save the image using the filename “Cdt<YourLastName>.png”.

Check Image Formats:

 Open the saved image in GIMP.
 Note the file extension to verify the format (e.g., .png for PNG, .bmp for BMP).

Understanding Resolutions
Objective: Change the resolution of an image using GIMP.

Steps:
 Open an Image: (Use the same Original.jpg image from above)
 Click on "File."
 Select "Open" and choose the image file.
 Check Image Resolution:
 Click on "Image" in the menu.
 Select "Print Size."
 Note the current resolution (usually in inches or millimeters).

Change Image Resolution:

 Click on "Image" again.

 Select "Print Size."
 Change the resolution (inches or millimeters). You can adjust width, height,
and resolution values. (Change the resolution to make the image 20% larger)
 Click "OK" to apply the changes.

Export the Image:

 Click on "File."
 Select "Export As" or "Export."
 Choose a format and click "Export." (Name the resized image into
“Cdt<YourLastName>-resolution.jpg”
 Adjust format-specific settings if necessary and save the image.

Check the New Resolution:

 Open the saved image in GIMP.
 Click on "Image" -> "Print Size" to verify the new resolution.

Image Resizing and Resolution Adjustment

Objective: Resize an image while adjusting its resolution.

Steps:
 Open an Image: (Use again the same Original.jpg image from above)
 Click on "File."
 Select "Open" and choose the image file.

 Resize the Image: (Make the image 20% smaller)

 Click on "Image."
 Select "Scale Image."
 Adjust the width and height of the image (in pixels).
 Change the resolution if needed.
 Click "Scale" to resize the image.

Export the Resized Image:

 Click on "File."
 Select "Export As" or "Export." (Name the resized image into
“Cdt<YourLastName>-scaled.jpg”
 Choose a format and click "Export."
 Adjust format-specific settings if necessary and save the image.

Check the Resized Image:

 Open the saved image in GIMP.
Click on "Image" -> "Print Size" to verify the new resolution and dimensions.

At this point, your output should contain Four (4) image files. See below
1. Original.jpg
2. Cdt<YourLastName>.png
3. Cdt<YourLastName>-resolution.jpg
4. Cdt<YourLastName>-scaled.jpg

SUBMIT THE Four (4) image files in the Google Form
