Fieldwork No. 2
TAPING OVER LEVEL GROUND

OBJECTIVES

1. To complete the fieldwork exercise with only the given instrument and allotted time.
2. To learn how to measure distance through taping.
3. To determine a relative precision from a tape length.

EQUIPMENT

• Range Poles
• Chaining Pins
• Plumb Bobs
• Tape Measure

PROCEDURE

1. Select a straight line on a level ground of unknown distance and on both ends establish
markers. Designate the end points as A and B.
2. From A to B, measure the length between the points using a tape measure. Do the same,
from B to A.
3. Compute the average length and relative precision using the data provided and gathered

Figure 1. Computation of the Average Length

To determine the relative precision, the average length must be computed first. As seen
on the figure, the average length was calculated by getting the total sum of length in all trials,
then dividing that to the total number of trials. Doing so, by using the data gathered, it will
yield an average length of 62.61 m.

AB − BA 62.60 − 62.62 −0.02 0.02 1 1

𝑅𝑃 = | |=| |=| |= = =
Average Length 62.61 62.61 62.61 62.61 3131
0.02

Figure 2. Computation of the Relative Precision

After calculating the average length, the relative precision can now be determined by
dividing the discrepancy by the mean measured length, and where the numerator is reduced to
unity or one. This is done by getting the absolute value of the difference in length, 0.02m, then
dividing it with the average length calculated in figure 1, 62.61m. However, in relative
precision, the value must be reduced to unity. This is first done by getting the quotient of the

average length by the discrepancy, then rounding it off from its whole number, resulting a value
of 3131. Then, divide 1 with the calculated value. Doing so will yield a relative precision of
1/3131.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION/S:

Conclusions

The following conclusions were drawn from the gathered data:

• Taping is a good method for measuring the distance between two points with great
accuracy and precision.
• Maintaining straightness of the tape while measuring the distance between two points
is difficult, which may result in varying measurements in its distance.
• The average length that was calculated between the two points was close from its actual
distance. This is because of the low relative precision that was calculated from the data.
Having a low relative precision means that the distances were measured with great
precision.

Recommendations:

This list indicates their recommendations for themselves, as well as for future
surveyors, to have a more accurate data and avoid any errors:

• When measuring an unknown distance, remain focused. Be alert for any factors that
may affect the precision of the measurements.
• The number of trials affect the accuracy of the data. This indicates that taking more
trials are important to calculate a more accurate measurement for an unknown distance.
• Consider the effects of the weather and exhaustion; stop for longer walks so you can
keep walking on a straight line. Keep in mind the practical safety considerations. For
accurate outcomes, make sure your processes are dependable and consistent.
• The accepted relative precision for measuring distance in taping varies between 1/3000 and
1/5000. If the relative precision of the data is higher than the range, repeat taking the
measurements.
• Work collaboratively with your team. Communication and coordination are essential to
ensure consistency in surveying practices.
