 To identify the most common operations can be carried out on a lathe process
 To learn the safety rules during lathe process

INTRODUCTION & THEORY:

Lathes are machines with a spindle that turns along with the work piece, and a
lathe knife or other cutting tool changes its shape. Lathes are primarily used to
manufacture rotary parts, to lathe cylindrical surfaces, to drill openings and to cut
threads (inner and outer). A lathe can be used to produce parts made of ferrous and
non-ferrous metals, plastics and wood. The work piece is clamped in the lathe either
in a chuck, between a chuck and a centre or between two centres. Metal lathes are
among the most basic and common of metal milling machines.

Machines are intended for milling surfaces of parts by rotary cutting. Machines
can be classified into several separate categories to use mainly into two groups:
machine for metal and machines for wood.

On metalworking lathes, the cutting tools are held rigidly inside a tool holder that
is mounted on a movable platform called the carriage. The tool is moved in and out by
means of hand cranks and back and forth either by hand cranking or under power
from the lathe. The result is that material can be removed from the work piece under a
very precise control to produce shapes that are close to quintessential precision.
Because of the inherent rotational nature of a lathe, a vast majority of the work
produced on it is basically cylindrical in form.

PROCEDURE:

Setting up the machine

 Place the metal to be tooled in the chuck.

 Tighten the chuck assembly using a hex key.

 Remove the hex key.
 Select the correct tool for the job.
 Set the tool bar assembly to the correct height.
 Select and set the correct angle of the tool for the job.

Commencing operating

 Switch on the machine.

 Set the start switch to the correct application for the job, example like moving
forward or backward.
 If machine has a right-hand chuck, the operator must stand to the left.
 If machine has a left-hand chuck, the operator must stand to the right.
 Position the coolant nozzle over the work piece and turn on coolant afterwards
 Keep clear of metal shavings to avoid contact or getting caught in them.
 Operator should always make a small cut with the first turn to see if the work
piece is set up correctly.
 Ensure tool bar has sufficient clearance away from the spinning chuck.

Shut down the machine and house keeping

 Always disconnect the cord from the main power source after the job is done
 Clean up any metal shavings for both the machine and the floor.
 Always wear gloves when cleaning up metal shavings.
 Apply a light coating of CRC or similar water-repellent lubricant to the
machine.
 Never store the tool carriage way up against the chuck.

APPARATUS:

1. Lathe Machine
- To transform the work piece into the product that we desired by using the
appropriate parts of the machine with the correct procedure or process.
2. Cylindrical Aluminium
- The work piece.
3. Vernier Caliper
- To get an accurate measurement and reading.
4. 8.5 Drill Bit
- To make a hole during drilling process.
5. Centre Drill

- Used to form a pilot hole for drilling at the centre of the work piece.\
6. Cutting Tool
- To cut the work piece.

Safety Precaution:

1. Wear eye protection (safety goggles)

2. Wear short sleeve clothes if it is possible, or clothes with snugly fitting cuffs if long
sleeve

3. Wear shoes

4. Remove wrist watches, necklaces, chains and any form of jewels.

DISCUSSION:

1. Why it very important to practice safety procedure duringworkshop

practice?

Because of important to practice safety procedure :

a) To prevent accident during a work.

b) Always take reasonable care before starting the work.

c) Make us more secure when doing a work in workshop.

2. Boring is the most difficult task in this project. List main precaution should
be taken so that the good boring pattern is obtain.

List of precaution:

a) Do not touch the drill when drilling was start.

b) Put some oil on the work piece and drilling tool.

c) Do not force the drill.

d) Avoid from waste work piece.

3. Study case of sample given, describe the error defects and how to overcome
them.

Base on this project, many error made on work piece because negligence and lack
of experience. From this case, we need to take a knowledge before starting a
work.

CONCLUSION :

By the end of work, we can know the principle of Lathe Machine. In a lathe
machine the operations, which are done is defines as a job. The job is held in a chuck
or between centres and rotates about its axis at a uniform speed. The cutting tools held
in the tool post is fed into the workpiece for a desired direction. Since there exists a
relative motion between the workpiece and the cutting tool, therefore the material is
removed in the form of chips and the desired shape is obtained.
