1.2 Evaluating Statement Calculus
Statements are evaluated depending on what truth value is known for the statements. The result whether the
statement calculus is evaluated true or false is based on the rules of the compound propositions that is as
follows:
a. Substitution Method
Evaluating statement method is done in the following steps.
If Ms. Philippines did her best but did not make it to the Ms.
Universe 2023’s Top 16 then the Filipinos are still proud of her.
Step 2: Substitute the given truth values of each component proposition. Given all proposition is
true.
(T T) T
Step 3: Evaluate.
(T T) T = T
Given that an implication is only false when the premise is true but the conclusion is false, the
statement where all the component proposition is true is hence, true.
If Ms. Philippines did her best but did not make it to the Ms.
Universe 2023’s Top 16 then the Filipinos are still proud of her.
(A B) C
Following the steps.
Step 1: List the variables in order of appearance from left to right.
A B C
Step 2: Assign values to the variables representing the propositions (each is 2x) from right to left.
22 21 20
A B C
Step 3: Take the sum of all values of each variable based on 2 x to know how many possible
combinations. For example, 4, 2, 1 when summed is equal to 7 hence – 8 combinations
of truth values from 7 down to 0.
22 = 4 21= 2 20 = 1
A B C
Step 4: Assign combinations per line based on values derived per variable.
22 = 4 21= 2 20 = 1

6 T T F
5 T F T
4 T F F
3 F T T
2 F T F
1 F F T
0 F F F
Step 5: Evaluate beginning from the innermost connectives or use the PRECEDENCE Rule.
22 = 4 21= 2 20 = 1
