Our project aimed to explore how different sports can bring
people together. Our outcome was hosting a sports event
playing volleyball for our school, which reflected our aim as we
got some great results. The goal was to create a connection
and shared experience among students of different cultures
and backgrounds. We assessed the impact of our project by
the turnout of the event we hosted and the forms we had
players fill out when the event ended.

respondents said they enjoyed the event and rated it 3 or
more out of 5. Moreover, 60% of respondents said they talked
to students they hadn’t before.
However, due to a slight misunderstanding, we had some
students for separate schools come to play football. This is
because originally our group was going to host football
competitions including 2 other schools interconnected with our
school, but after running into some problems with organising
such a large event, we had to change it to volleyball and only
invite our school students. Nevertheless, after explaining what
had happened, the students from other schools were happy to
stay and play volleyball instead.

Overall, we had a great turnout will about 20 plus students at

our event playing volleyball. However, next time I think it
would be smart to set and confirm all the plans, before
sending out any invitations so that there would not be any
misunderstandings.

process?
I feel I managed to work efficiently and successfully
throughout the team project, since I was able to complete all
the responsibilities assigned to me, on time. I did my research
during the first week of the team project and I was focused on
reading about volleyball and how it brings together
communities and different cultures. Following that, I played a
big part in organising and planning the event as I chose the
date and helped reserve the sports hall, we held it in.
I feel I was good at managing my time well and planning for
when I had to get things done so that we could move forward
in time without having setbacks. Sometimes it was rather
difficult to find enough time in my schedule to finish work on
the project, but I was successful in the end.
Next time I will try harder to communicate with my team
more as I feel that would have made the process of hosting a
big event much simpler.

Although I often prefer to work alone, there are certain
advantages to working in a team. I’d say that everyone in my
team provided a ton of creativity. Moreover, as we had 8
members, we were able to split work very nicely and have a
few different viewpoints as we are all for different
backgrounds.
A challenge of working in a team is that everybody has their
ideas and sometimes it can be difficult to incorporate
everybody’s opinions and ideas. During the start of our
project, we had a few disagreements on what topic we were
going to choose, and after further discussion we were able to
eliminate topics one by on to come to a mutual agreement
that everyone was happy with.
I believe I gave my team and the project a lot of devotion. I
aimed to assist as much as possible and make sure to
constantly communicate with my peers. I found I was a big
help during discussions when it came to scheduling our time
research findings here as that
goes in the next section.)

and getting things done quickly. For instance, I planned our
group’s meetings outside of class and ensured that we all
worked both, together and independently.
As our team had quite a few members I was not familiar with,
it was a bit harder to work together, although after just a week
of team project meetings we got to know each other better
and started communicating freely which positively impacted
my commitment.
Because I believe I have quite good and strong opinions, it
was sometimes challenging for me to compromise with
others. This is a limitation that I am working on right now, and
I learnt more about it during our project since I had to
negotiate with my teammates a few times and go through the
process of compromising.

My Key Research Findings about Cultural Perspectives
Separately, I was tasked to research the role of volleyball in
bringing various cultures together. I focused on volleyball
throughout the Olympic games (Olympics, 2020) as well as
youth development programs made for volleyball (University
of Lincoln, 2023).
Connection of my work to the Team Element
My work played a large role in our outcome since our group
chose to host a volleyball tournament. As a result, my
research was really useful in determining how we might use
volleyball to encourage students to communicate with one
another.
Overall Learning about the Issue
Prior to starting this project, my understanding of sports was
limited, and I did not fully understand the impact that various
sports could have on individuals. However, after completing
research and analysing the results we collected, I feel that I
have expanded my knowledge on the topic. Moreover, I have
noticed that I now tend to think more about sports than
before, particularly with regard to the close relationships and
communities formed by different sports teams.
