In a 5-paragraph essay,
The first paragraph is called Introduction.
The next three paragraphs consist of the Body of the essay.
The fifth and final paragraph is the Conclusion
Parts of an Essay
1.Introduction
The introductory paragraph is the first paragraph of an essay. It introduces the central points of
an essay. A good opening paragraph captures the interest of a reader and tells why your topic is
important.
2.Body of the essay (supporting paragraphs)
It is the main idea of an essay. It develops the effective points of the essay. In order to write a
good essay, it is very important to write the ‘body of the essay’ very well. The following are
some steps to write it well:
(i) List the points that develop the central points of your essay.
(ii) Place each supporting point in its own paragraph.
Develop each supporting point with facts, details and examples.
3. Conclusion (The End):
The concluding paragraph comes at the end of an essay after you have finished developing your
ideas. It is the main conclusion of the essay.
You want to leave the reader with a sense that your essay is complete. In order to write
effective conclusions, follow the steps given below:
Restate the strongest points of the essay that support your central points.
Conclude your essay by restating the central points in different words.
Give your personal opinion or suggest a plan for action.

Points to Remember
• We should give a title to the essay. Usually, the topic of the essay is the
title.
• We should remain within specified word limit.
• The introduction should contain our stand or opinion on the subject.
Here, we should enumerate the main arguments of our essay in brief. It
should not be too long.
• The body of the essay can be divided into paragraphs. Each paragraph
should explain one argument. Stronger arguments should be written first.
• The conclusion can be a brief summary of the main arguments of your
essay. It may also contain your personal views on the topic. It should not
be more than 5-6 lines.
• Counter- arguments or opinions different from your own view can also be
included briefly in the body of the essay.
• In order to catch the attention of the reader, quotations can be used in
the introduction.
EX.1 SAMPLE- Pollution
‘Pollution’ means an unclean, impure environment which is harmful to our
health. Pollution can be many types such as water-pollution, air-pollution,
food-pollution and noise pollution. All these types are equally harmful to our
health. Water-pollution is caused in the urban and rural areas because water
gets impure due to various reasons such as allowing factory wastes to flow
into the rivers.
Almost all the rivers of India have become large sewage drains. The water
from these rivers spread toxic chemicals in fields and the crops become
infected with deadly chemicals. We eat grains of these crops and may fall
sick.
Furthermore, food is prepared or grown with the help of chemicals,
fertilizers and harmful pesticides, which in turn help the farmer with a
bumper crop but it pollutes the crop. This pollution of food leads to serious
medical problems among the consumers. They consume the harmful
chemicals unknowingly and invite trouble.
Noise-pollution too leads to severe psychological disturbances among urban
individuals. Palpitation of the heart and lunacy result due to noise pollution
in the cities and industrial areas of India.
Pollution checking stations have been located in all the major cities and
towns of the country along with petrol pumps. Pure water is being sold in
bottles. Further, the usage of natural fertilizers and bio-chemicals is being
emphasized upon the industries, NGO’s and farmers. The rivers are being
cleaned and pollutants are being minimized in their discharges. Old vehicles
(which are older than fifteen years) are being abandoned.
People are being educated about pollution control equipment, electric cars,
car pool system, usage of tidal energy, solar energy and other energy sources
etc. These campaigns would help the masses adopt new and eco-friendly
technologies.

Dear Diary
It was a marvellous day today. Our school declared a holiday today due to
incessant rains. It rained cats and dogs. The atmosphere was moist and was filled
the croaks of frogs. It was cloudy and dark outside. We could hear the thunder
rumbling far away. The streets were water logged. Some children made paper
boats and floated them in puddles. My friends and I played football in the rain. It
was very enjoyable. After sometime, it started raining heavily and we all dashed
home. It was a fun filled day.
