TASK
GRADE 11
MATHEMATICS INVESTIGATION
FEBRUARY 2022
MARKS: 100
TIME: 3 Hours
1. This task paper consists of FOUR Sections: Section A to be done as HOME WORK, section
2. The learner needs a pair of mathematical instruments to draw diagrams, where it is indicated
to do so.
4. Clearly show ALL calculations, diagrams, graphs, et cetera which you have used in
determining your answers.
7. If necessary, answers should be rounded off to TWO decimal places, unless stated
otherwise.
ACTIVITY 1
Describe the following terms and use the figure above to identify an example of each
[10]
4
ACTIVITY 1
1.1 Draw three circles with centre O and the radii of 3cm, 5 cm and 7cm respectively. (3)
1.2 Repeat the following steps for each circle:
1.2.1 Draw chord AB in each of the circle. (Not passing through the centre) (3)
1.2.2 Find the midpoint, C of chord AB in each circle. (3)
1.2.3 Draw a line from the centre of the circle to point C, on the chord in each. (3)
1.2.4
^
Measure the angle A C O in each circle. (3)
1.2.5 By comparing the answers in 1.2.4 for all three circles, make a
conclusion. (2)
1.2.6 Complete: A line drawn from a centre of a circle ________________the
chord, then the line is _____________. (2)
[19]
ACTIVITY 2
2.1 Draw two circles with centre O, and radii of 3cm and 5cm respectively (2)
2.1.1 Mark any two points P and Q on the circumference of circle to create a minor and
major arc in each of the circles. (2)
2.1.2 Draw the radii, P to O and Q to O in both circles to produce angle
¿ ¿
O 1 and a reflex angle O 2 (2)
2.1.3 Mark point R on the circumference of each circle, on the opposite segment to
P and Q. (2)
2.1.4 Join P to R and Q to R in both circles. (2)
¿ ¿
2.1.6 Carefully study your answers in 2.1.5 and make a conclusion. (2)
[14]
5
ACTIVITY 3
3.1.1 Draw a chord AB. (A and B touching the circumference of the circle) (1)
3.1.2 Draw a chord CD, (C and D touching the circumference of the circle) (1)
3.1.4 Name the figure produced by the four points which lie on the circumference. (1)
3.1.5
^
Measure the sizes of the angles: A CB,C { DB,
^ D B^ A and B A^ C¿ (4)
3.2 Draw another circle with centre O and a radius of 5cm. (1)
3.2.1 Draw two chords, PR and ST not crossing or touching each other. (2)
3.2.4
^ ^ ^
Measure the sizes of the angles P R T,R { T S,T { S¿ P and S P^ R¿ (4)
3.5 Activity 3 helps us to conclude that: the sum of opposite angles of a _________

ACTIVITY 1
Fill in
The line drawn from the centre of the circle to the midpoint of the chord, is perpendicular
to the chord
A D B
Given: Circle with center O. D is a midpoint of the chord AB such that AD=DB
Proof :
Statement Reason
Δ OAD and Δ OBD
In 1.1 ………………………. (1)
OA=OB
given
AD= DB
1.3 ……………….............. (1)
OD is a 1.2 ................... side.

But A D B is a straight line
^ =D
∴D ^ =90 °

ACTIVITY 2
Angle at the centre is twice/ double in size than the angle at circumference, subtended
by the same arc

A O C=2A { B^ C ¿ .
Required To Prove:
Construction: Draw/ join BO through centre O to produce D
Statement Reason

OA = OB = OC
In Δ AOB (2.1) ............................... (1)

A =B 1
Angles opposite equal sides of
O^ 1 = B^ 1 + A^ isosceles triangle.

In Δ COB
¿ Δ C O^ B
C = (2. 2).. . .. . (1) Exterior angle of
O^ 2 = B^ 2 + C^
= (2 .3 ) . . .. .. . .. .. (1) Angles opposite equal sides.
BUT
A O^ C = O^ 1 + O^ 2
= (2 . 4 ) .. .. . .. . +( 2 .5 ) . .. .. . .. .. (2 )
= 2 ( B^ 1 + B^ 2 )
