Field hygiene and Sanitation are two facets of military medicine that seek to
ensure the reduction of casualties through avoidance of non-combat related
health issues among military personnel, particularly in the prevention of disease.
As such, it encompasses prevention of communicable diseases; promotes
personal hygiene; ensures adequate field water supply; supervises food
sanitation; administers proper waste disposal and controls, prevents and combats
insect-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks, mites and
other insects. Field hygiene also includes knowledge, avoidance, and control of
venomous animals and rodents, as well as mitigation of health problems related
to extreme temperature environments.
Washing your hands often is a good way to stop the germs on your hands from
making you sick. Try to bathe or shower often. This helps prevent infections and
body lice. Wash well, especially under your armpits and around your genitals
(vulva or penis) and anus. Keeping clean will remove bacteria that cause body
odour (BO). It is especially important to shower or bathe after vigorous exercise.
Use a soapy washcloth to clean your body. Start cleaning your head and face.
Then continue to your arms, chest, abdomen (tummy) and back. Finally clean your
legs, genitals, and buttocks. You can use soap, shower gel or a hypoallergenic
body wash.
Under ideal conditions, Soldiers should shower daily, or at least once every week
to maintain good personal hygiene. Frequent showering prevents skin infections
and helps to prevent potential parasite infestations. When showers are not
available, washing daily with a washcloth or soap and water is advised.
