Mathematics
Quarter 2 – Module 7:
Working with Order of
Operations
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you interpret
and explain the GEMDAS rule and perform two or more operations on whole numbers
with or without exponents and grouping symbols. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes your diverse
vocabulary level. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook
you are now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1. Performing Two or More Operations on Whole Numbers without
Exponents and Grouping Symbols

• Lesson 2. Performing Two or More Operations on Whole Numbers with

Exponents and Grouping Symbols

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. recognize order of operations on whole numbers;
2. interpret and explain the Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition,
and Subtraction (GEMDAS) rule (M6NS-IIf-148); and,
3. perform two or more operations on whole numbers with or without exponents and
grouping symbols. (M6NS-IIf-149)

What’s New

Study and analyze the problem below.

Agnes got sick and was absent from school for a week. When she returned, she tried
working on a task posed by her teacher. The task and her solution are shown below.
8–5+4x7÷2
=3+4x7÷2
=7x7÷2
= 49 ÷ 2
= 24.5
Is Agnes’ answer correct? Why or why not?

What is It

It is important to follow a rule when performing two or more operations on whole

numbers. Without this rule, we might calculate them in the wrong order and get a
wrong answer.
Do you still remember the MDAS?
Let us use this rule to check Agnes’ solution.

8–5+4x7÷2 First, multiply or divide.

From left to right, multiplication appears
= 8 – 5 + 28 ÷ 2 first before division.
So, “multiply” first and then “divide”.

=8–5+ 14 Next, add or subtract.

From left to right, subtraction appears
first before addition.
= 3 + 14
So, “subtract” first and then “add”.

= 17 This is the answer.

Agnes’ answer is incorrect because the answer should be 17.

In her solution, she performed the operations from left to right, but started with
subtraction instead of multiplication.

5
CO_Q2_Mathematics6_Module7
Here is another example:

16 ÷ 4 x 5 + 7 - 8 First, multiply or divide.

From left to right, division appears first
= 4x5+7 - 8 before multiplication.
So, “divide” first and then “multiply”.

= 20 + 7 - 8 Next, add or subtract.

From left to right, addition appears first
before subtraction.
= 27 - 8
So, “add” first and then “subtract”.

= 19 This is the answer.

What’s More

A. Identify the order of operations to be performed in each expression. Write A for

Addition, S for Subtraction, M for Multiplication, and D for Division. Then compute.
Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Example: 7 + 6 x 4 ÷ 12 M, D, A 9

1) 6 ÷ 2 +1 × 4 __________ _____
2) 18 – 12 ÷ 6 + 7 __________ _____
3) 4 × 3 – 10 + 16 __________ _____
4) 3 × 3 + 10 – 3 __________ _____
5) 30 ÷ 2 x 4 – 8 + 9 __________ _____
B. Fill in the box with the missing number. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

1) 16 – 7 + 8 2) 3 × 5 – 4 3) 18 ÷ 6 × 3 + 4
= +8 = –4 = ×3+4
= = = +
=
4) 18 – 9 + 4 x 10 5) 12 ÷ 2 + 4 x 5 – 7
= 18 – 9 + = +4x5–7
= + = + –7
= = –

What’s New

During a game, two pupils wrote down their solutions to the following task posted by
their teacher.
(4 x 10) + 102 ÷ 5

Whose answer is correct? Why?

What is It

To find out whose answer is correct, we are going to follow the rules in performing two
or more operations with exponents and grouping symbols by using the GEMDAS rule.
Let us evaluate the expression (4 x 10) + 102 ÷ 5.

(4 x 10) + 102 ÷ 5 First, perform operations within each

grouping symbols.

Next, evaluate exponential expressions.

= 40 + 102 ÷ 5
Then, perform multiplication or
division from left to right or whichever
= 40 + 100 ÷ 5 operation comes first.

Finally, perform addition or subtraction

= 40 + 20 from left to right or whichever operation
comes first.

= 60 This is the answer.

Pupil B’s solution is correct.

13
CO_Q2_Mathematics6_Module7
Pupil A’s solution is incorrect. The operations within the grouping symbols were
performed first, then the exponential expression was evaluated, but addition was
performed first instead of division.
Here are some examples:
Example A.
3 + [(7 x 4) – 6] First, perform operations within each
grouping symbols.
So, multiply, then subtract the expression
= 3 + [28 - 6] within the brackets.

Then, perform addition or subtraction

= 3 + 22 from left to right or whichever operation
comes first.
= 25 This is the answer.

Example B.

8 x 53 - 9 ÷ 3 + 2 First, evaluate exponential expressions.

Next, perform multiplication or

= 8 x 125 - 9 ÷ 3 + 2 division from left to right or whichever
operation comes first.
= 1000 - 9 ÷ 3 + 2 So, “multiply” first then “divide”.

= 1000 - 3 + 2 Then, perform addition or subtraction

from left to right or whichever operation
comes first.
= 997 +2 So, “subtract” first then “add”.

= 999 This is the answer.

What’s More

A. Identify the order of operations to be performed in each expression. Write G for

Grouping symbols, E for Exponents, A for Addition, S for Subtraction, M for
Multiplication, and D for Division. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Example: 30 ÷ 5 + (5 x 6) x 19 Answer: G, D, M, A

1) 20 + 5 x (15 - 8)
2) 42 – (3 x 8) + (48 ÷ 4)
3) 84 ÷ 6 x 22 – (9 + 7)
4) (18 x 7) – (22 – 20)3
5) 12² - 6 x 4 + 12

2) (13 – 5) x 3 + 7 – 8 B. 23
3) 5 x 4 + (12 + 22) – 30 ÷ 3 C. 21
4) 8 x 33 + 63 ÷ 9 – 6 D. 217
5) 5 x 4 + (16 ÷ 4) – 3 E. 26

2) 7 x (9 – 3) + 8
=7x6+8
= 7 x 14
= 98

15

= 29

4) [9 × (9 ÷ 3) – 9] + 6
= [9 × 3 – 9] + 6
= [27 – 9] + 6
= 18 + 6
= 24

5) (16 ÷ 8) x 15 – 33 + 8
= (16 ÷ 8) x 15 – 27 + 8
= 8 – 27 + 8
=3+8
