How to read Section Tables?

Column definition (using Eurocode notation):
1. Designation of hot-rolled section. 1016 x 305 x 487 is for the
section with depth of cross-section (h) of 1016 mm (actual nominal
is 1036.3 mm (are exact metric conversions of nominal imperial
sizes, here 40.79 inches), width of cross-section (b) of 305 mm
(actual is 308.5 mm (i.e. 12.15 inches)) and mass per unit length of
487 kg/m.
2. Nominal mass per meter: 486.7 kg/m (To establish value of
permanent action (G) due to dead load.)
3. Nominal overall depth of Section (h) - shape dimensions are given
in units of mm.
4. Nominal overall breadth of Section (b)
5. Nominal thickness of web (tw )
6. Nominal thickness of flange (tf)
7. Nominal root radius (r)

How to read Section Tables?

Column definition (using Eurocode notation):
8. Nominal depth of straight portion of a web (d)
9. *Flange width-to-thickness ratio ((cf/tf) for local buckling.
10. *Web width-to-thickness ratio for local buckling (cw/tw ).
11. Major second moment of area (Iy). Geometric properties of sections
are given in units of cm.
12. Minor second moment of area (Iz).
13. Radius of gyration about the Major (y-y) axis (iy)
14. Radius of gyration about the Minor (z-z) axis (iz).
Radius of gyration is defined by expression , where I is the second
moment of area about the relevant axis (in Columns 11 and 12) and A is the
area of the cross-section (in Column 23), determined for the gross cross-
section.

* Width-to-thickness ratios are used in EC3 to classify each compressed (or partially compressed element)

Column definition (using Eurocode notation):

15. Elastic modulus (Wel,y) about Major (y-y) axis.

16. Elastic modulus (Wel,z) about Minor (z-z) axis.
17. Plastic modulus (Wpl,y) about Major (y-y) axis.
18. Plastic modulus (Wpl,z) about Minor (z-z) axis.
19. & 20. The buckling parameter (U) and Torsional index (X) are
specific parameters usedused in BS 5950-1:2000 (Structural use of
steelwork in building - Part 1: Code of practice for design-
Rolled and welded sections) to determine the buckling moment
resistance.
21. Warping constant (IW). Note this geometric properties has units of
dm6 (i.e. 1012 mm6).

Simple framing
• Steel design in this module will be limited to
Braced or Non-sway frames.
• Bracing transfers the lateral loading (e.g. from
wind) to the ground without the frame having
significant horizontal deformation.
• Moments and forces can be determined using first
order elastic structural analysis.
• Second-order effects are small enough to be
ignored.
