Lesson Guide in English- Literature Grade 10 (4th grading)


Time Frame: 60 minutes (1 meeting)

I. Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
a. The learners are able to identify the elements of the plot of the story “The Gift of
Magi” by O. Henry.
b. Recognize the selflessness and sacrifice displayed by the characters in the story.
c. Craft a reflective essay about a personal experience related to the story.
II. Subject Matter

Lesson Proper

A1. Activity
1. Review: 3-5 minutes
Call a student to answer the following questions:
 What are the characters in the short story all about?
 Give me the different kinds of character.
2. Motivation: 5-7 minutes
The Singing Bee
Procedure:
1. The teacher will present a Christmas box of gifts in front of the class.

2. Each student has the opportunity and chance to get it through filling the blank
lyrics of the Christmas song "Christmas in our Hearts."
3. To make the game fair, the teacher will let the students to volunteer for the game.
4. Students who will get the highest number of correct answers will receive the gift.
5. However, the teacher will not yet reveal what's inside the box unless they have
completed the lyrics of the songs.

3. Activity Proper
(Auditory and Visual Learners)
1. The teacher will let the whole class to read the short story entitled “The Gift of
the Magi” by O. Henry.
2. Before presenting the literary text, the teacher will ask the students “If you loved
someone, are you willing ti give your treasured thing without counting the cost?”
3. The students will be given copies of the story.
4. The whole class will participate in reading the text orally through kangaroo
reading. Students will take turns in reading each paragraph of the story until the
whole text is done.

A2. Analysis: 10-15 minutes


The teacher will pick a student from different groups and will ask one question only
that will vary to the next student and so on and so forth:

1. What are the things the couple sell to buy a Christmas gift for each other?
2. How do the sacrifices made by Della and Jim in "The Gift of the Magi" reflect the
theme of love and selflessness?
3. Consider the choices made by the characters, Della and Jim, in the story. If you
were in their situation, would you make the same decisions? Why or why not??
4. If you loved someone, are you willing ti give your treasured thing without
counting the cost?

A3. Abstraction
1. The teacher will begin the lesson proper by introducing the intended learning
outcomes or the objectives of the period.
2. The teacher afterwards will present the definition and key concepts on the elements
of the plot.
3. The teacher will ask questions while discussing the lesson to make sure if the
students are listening to the discussion.

A4. Application: 8-10 minutes


Activity: “Plot me”
1. The teacher will divide the students into groups of 4.
2. Each group will be given a construction paper and pentel pen.
3. As a group, students will plot the short story “The Gift of the Magi”.
4. Groups will discuss and report their works in front of the class
The teacher will grade their work with the following criteria:

IV. Assessmemt: 8-10 minutes


 In connection to the story the students will make a reflection essay on what is
their treasured gift in life.
 Minimum with 250 words, they will write it on a whole sheet of paper
 They will be graded with the following rubrics.
