THE BACKGROUND AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Grades are computed by teachers mainly based on a student’s performance. These

are based on written work, performance tasks, and examinations, along with attendance

and class participation (Ellis et, al. 2018). Grades also depend on a student’s willingness to

learn. It does not matter how proficient a teacher is at teaching, but how students have the

true passion to consume and retain the information being taught in their minds.

As said by EuroSchool (2024), academic success refers to the fulfillment of

educational goals set within an academic environment. However, it goes beyond just

acquiring high marks in examinations. It also encompasses a deep understanding of

subjects, acquiring pertinent skills, and personal and intellectual growth facilitated through

passionate learning.

Referring to the information from Penn LPS Online (2023), academic success means

different things to different people. Whether an individual wants to explore a subject area

that they are passionate about or enhance their credentials to advance their career, one of

the primary purposes of education is to help them reach their full personal and professional

potential. To achieve one’s vision for success, it is important to create clear, actionable

objectives and develop good habits and skills to guide one’s learning and keep them on track

in their studies.

In addition, academic success is important because it is strongly linked to the

positive outcomes that most people value. As observed through time, universities have high

standards and look for high grades in the report cards of applicants because it indicates that
a student has demonstrated strong academic abilities and has successfully mastered the

material in their courses. Additionally, conforming to Collegiate Gateway (2020), grades are

often seen as a predictor of a student's potential for success in college. Hence, students who

do well in school are better able to make the transition into adulthood and achieve

occupational and economic success.

For example, adults who are academically successful and with high levels of

education are more likely to be employed, have stable employment, have more employment

opportunities than those with less education, and earn higher salaries. Academic success is

important because working people will need higher levels of education to tackle the

technologically demanding occupations of the future. Academic achievement is important

for the successful development of young people in society (Regier, 2011).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the factors influencing and contributing to the academic

success of Grade 11 Students.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the factors influencing the academic success of the students?

2. How do the factors contribute to the students’ academic success?

3. What are the recommendations that can be made, based on the findings of the

study?
Significance of the Study

The purpose of the research is to discover the factors influencing the academic

success of the Grade 11 Students, and explain how it contributes to their grades.

This research is conducted to benefit the following:

To the Students. When the influencing factors are identified, the respondents with

high academic success can serve as role models or inspirations. Because of this, a domino

effect can occur. In other words, other students can learn and improve their grades, similar

to their peers.

To the Parents. Guiding their children, the students, in maintaining their academic

success will surely help them. Also, the parents would benefit from it, because of the bright

future and the successful opportunities that their children have in their hands.

To the Future Researchers. This study can benefit them by having a handful of

related data, which they can use in their research with a similar topic or issue.

Scope and Delimitation

The study is about the influencing factors on the academic success of the Grade 11

Students. The study aims to identify the said factors, and discover how it contributes to the

high grades of the students.

The researcher conducted qualitative research and it was conducted online to Grade

11 Students of Gerona Junior College, Inc. The researcher utilized purposive sampling in

choosing the Grade 11 respondents. This means that the researcher chose the respondents
who could answer data that would be convenient and beneficial in making the research. In

this study, open-ended questions were utilized in a survey in Google Forms, and interviews

(via chat in Messenger) as data gathering instruments, to comply with the

phenomenological research design.
