PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES
Presider: Sister,
have they been prepared and are they ready
to receive this sacrament?
ASSEMBLY: Yes
CANDIDATES: I am.
HOMILY
Presider: Do you renounce Satan, and all his works, and all his empty
show?
CANDIDATES: I do.
Presider: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose
again from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the
Father?
CANDIDATES: I do.
Presider: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
came upon the Apostles at Pentecost and today is given to you
sacramentally in Confirmation?
CANDIDATES: I do.
Presider: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud
to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.
COMMENTATOR: Amen
… The presider faces the people and with hands joined, sings or says:
The presider alone extends hands over the candidates and says the prayer.
No one else in the assembly extends hands, nor do any concelebrating
priests extend hands.
… brings the chrism to the presider. Each candidate goes to the bishop. The sponsor
places his right hand on the latter’s shoulder and gives the candidate’s name to the
bishop; or the candidate may give his own name.
The bishop dips his right thumb in the chrism and makes the sign of cross on
the forehead of the one to be confirmed, as he says:
There should always be two candidates in front of the bishop at all times, with the
sponsors always directly behind the candidate.
It is preferable that there be silence during the entire anointing since we are
invoking the Holy Spirit.
When he offers the gesture of peace, The presider will not shake the hand of each
candidate, but will lightly touch each one on the left cheek with the palm of his
hand.
After all have been confirmed, the Bishop washes his hands. Lemon quarters, a
pitcher of water, a basin, and a towel are presented by the servers. Then these items
are removed.
LEADER: On this, our Confirmation Day, we ask the Holy Spirit to bless
our parents and help them in the handing on of the faith. We
pray that we will have the strength and courage to practice that
faith in the years to come.
We pray…
LEADER: For all of us who are confirmed today: we thank the Lord for the
gifts he has given us and we ask for the courage to become true
followers of Jesus.
We pray…
LEADER: We pray for all Christians and especially the community here
present. May we be strengthened in our faith, so that, in the
years ahead, we may always remain open to the Holy Spirit and
confess our faith despite all obstacles.
We pray…
LEADER: For all the teachers in our schools, who have prepared us for
this, our Confirmation Day. That they may be blessed with the
joy of the Holy Spirit.
We pray…
LEADER: We pray for peace all over the world, but we especially pray for
a lasting peace in our own country. May the Holy Spirit guide
the peacemakers to make the right decisions.
We pray….
ALL: Lord, hear our prayer.
LEADER: For those who are suffering all over the world because of illness,
war and famine: that we may, throughout our lives, remember
those less fortunate than ourselves, and may the Holy Spirit
give them the strength to bear their illness and suffering.
We pray….
LEADER: We pray in a special way for those members of our families and
community who have died. That they may share in the peace,
joy, and happiness of eternal life in heaven with our God.
We pray….
PRESIDER: God our Father, you sent your Holy Spirit upon the Apostles,
and through them and their successors you give the Spirit to
your people. May his work begun at Pentecost continue to grow
in the hearts of all who believe. Through Christ our Lord.
COMMENTATOR: Amen
