INTRODUCTION

This report encapsulates the highlights of my enriching journey as a Development Knowledge


Facilitator, acting as a catalyst for change during my service year as a member of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) Community Development Service.

My introduction to the SDGs occurred while I was still in the University, when I heard about it at
the NYSC orientation camp, I was enthusiastic and determined to create a substantial impact in
my community through the SDGs. The experience has been nothing short of inspiring, and I am
grateful for the opportunity to be a positive force.

The SDGs serve as an extraordinary platform dedicated to achieving and promoting goals in every
society and community, ultimately striving to make the world a better place for all. The impact of
the SDGs extends beyond community outreach; it also seeks to disseminate knowledge to
individuals. My fellow Development Knowledge Facilitators and I have played a pivotal role in
ensuring that the experience is not only impactful but also worthwhile to the students.

The teachings and training I received during the camp served as a valuable foundation, providing
me with a profound understanding of the essence of SDGs and its global significance. Beyond
equipping me with the necessary skills for my NYSC project, this experience has endowed me
with a lifelong skillset. Our efforts on the platform, particularly in engaging with students,
reinforce the paramount importance of SDGs and the positive transformation it can bring to
society.

THE PLATFORM

The name of the platform I adopted is Kuramo Junior College situated off Ligali Ayorinde,
Bishop Aboyade Cole St. opposite Exxon Mobil, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Ten (10) other
corp members and I visited the school every second Thursday of the month to educate the
students with particular attention to the JSS 2 students (currently in JSS 3) on subjects related to
the SDGs and other educational & environmental challenges in general.

We do this in their various classes during their break period between 11:00am to 12:00pm.

CHALLENGES

1. Lack of a scheduled time: There is no particular time in the school timetable fixed for
extracurricular activities or given to us to speak to the students. We often times have to
use the students break and this affects their concentration or availability as some students
might need to go and get what to eat or do some other things.
2. Lack of effective communication measures: Every advocacy we attend, we visit at least
four classes with an average of fifty students. Managing the noise in each class and being
audible for the students to hear was quite challenging.
3. Lack of adequate materials and information for students: Due to the limited number
of times we get to spend with the students, they may be required to do more personal
research at their convenience about the Goals or other things we have discussed but most
of these students do not have access to the Internet or books that focus more on the
SDGs.

CONTRIBUTION

1. Kuramo Junior College was adopted as a platform by Eti Osa 1 Corp members in April
2022. We had joined batch 22-C who had begun a legacy of continuity. Now that our
batch is passing out, we have ensured that there are still DKFs in the school to continue
from where we stopped. We have further ensured the continuity of the development
efforts in the school.

2. SDGs should be fully incorporated into school’s syllabus: with the wave of how the
world is going, it would be a nice avenue to have a session where children are fully
impacted with knowledge of these goals, more time for questions to be answered,
assignments and better understanding in general.

3. A stipend of N10,000 was given to the top-performing JS2 student in school. It is a way
of encouraging the student to know the importance of education.

4. After educating the students on SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 6 (clean water and
sanitation), as part of our contribution to the community development service and the
goal of SDGs, we reached out to corporate individual who donated funds for the purchase
of a new storage water tank and waste baskets.
