1.0 Brief Description:

A cotter joint, also known as a socket and spigot joint, is a method
of temporarily joining two coaxial rods. One rod is fitted with a spigot,
which fits inside a socket on one end of the other rod. Slots in the socket
and the spigot align so that a cotter can be inserted to lock the two rods
together. The cotter used within a cotter joint is typically an elongated
wedge, which can be driven into the slots.
Cotter joints are used to support axial loads between the two rods,
tensile or compressive. Although a cotter joint will resist rotation of one rod
relative to the other, it should not be used to join rotating shafts. This is
because the cotter will not be balanced and may work loose under the
combination of vibration and centrifugal force.
These components were historically used to join connecting rods in
steam engines and pumps used to drain mines. Cotter joints were favoured
because they are relatively easy to design and manufacture, they produce a
rigid connection and they are not prone to working loose in reciprocating
machinery. Today they still find applications in a number of areas such as
anchor bolts. Knuckle joints are often used instead.
A cotter joint is formed by first inserting the spigot end into the
socket end. The slots are then aligned before the cotter is driven through the
slots in both components. The slots are positions so that as the cotter is
driven into position, the spigot is drawn into the socket until a shoulder on
the spigot rests securely against the end of the socket. The angle of the
cotter is determined by the coefficient of friction and the ease of
disassembly required.
Typically, the taper angle is less than the angle of friction so that no
axial force would cause the cotter to push out of the slots. Additional
positive locking devices may be used for cotter joints subjected to vibration.
2.0 Course outcomes Intigrated:
a. Identify different components of IC engines and its auxiliaries.

3.0 Actual Procedure Followed:

• First, we discussed about the topics for our project.
• Then we decided to do this project.
• We divided work among us.
• Research and Execution work was given to Manish Chavan, Nitin
Ghawhre and Sarvesh Warawdekar.
• Sample Collecting work was given to whole group.
• We contributed equal efforts for the sample requirements.
• We started to do our respective works which we divided among us.
• We gathered information from books and internet and arranged all
these information in MS Word.
• At last, we rechecked our project report and Model.
• And finally, we completed our Micro-Project

4.0 Output of Micro-project :

➢ Introduction to Various Applications of Cotter
Joint-
Cotter joint is used to connect two rods subjected to axial tensile
or compressive loads. Cotter joint is widely used to connect the piston rod
and cross head of the steam engine, so as a joint between the piston rod
and the tailor pump rod, foundation bolt etc. Failure of cotter joint may
causes accident, so it is necessary to design cotter joint to withstand under
tension without failure the effective design of mechanical device or
assembly demand the predictive knowledge of its behaviour in working
condition.
The Failure of cotter joint may causes accident so it is necessary
to design cotter joint to withstand under tension without failure. The
effective design of mechanical device or assembly demand the predictive
knowledge of its behaviour in working condition. It became necessary for
the designer to know the forces and stress developed during its operation.
In this project we use theoretical method for finding dimensions of cotter
joint.

A cotter is a flat wedge shaped piece of rectangular cross-section

and its width is tapered (Either on one side or both sides) from one end to
another for an easy adjustment. The taper varies from 1 in 48 to 1 in 24
and it may be increased up to 1 in 8, If a locking device is provided. The
locking device may be a taper pin or a set screw used on the lower end of
the cotter. The cotter is usually made of mild steel or wrought iron. A
cotter joint is a temporary fastening and is used to connect rigidly two co-
axial rods or bars which are subjected to axial tensile or compressive
forces. It is usually used in connecting a piston rod to the cross- head of a
reciprocating steam engine, A piston rod and its extension as a tail or pump
rod, Strap end of connecting rod etc.
Cotter joint is widely used in application in automobiles and other
field. So it should be strong enough so if it cant sustain that amount of
load, otherwise there is possibility of accidents.
• This joint use between the pistons rod and the tail of the pump rod.
• Cotter’s joints are used between the slide spindle and the fork of the
valve mechanism.
• Cotter and Dwell arrange to join two parts of a flywheel.
• Foundation bolt: mainly used for fastening foundation and
construction heavy machines
• In an automobile engine, the cotter joint is used to connect the
extension of the piston rod
• with the connecting rod in the cross head.
• The cotter joint has historically been used to connect connecting rods
to steam engines and pumps of dumping mines.
• It is used in bicycles to connect the paddle to the sprocket wheel.
• Use a wet air pump to join a tail rod with the piston rod.
• It is used to connects two rods of equal diameter subjected to axial
forces.
