Differentiating Biases from Prejudices

Difference between Bias and Prejudice

In the dialogue you read about club meeting, two members are negatively biased
about people living and coming from the provinces, in this case, the Ilonggos. These
two mem-bers may have heard wrong information, and bad impression about
Ilonggos, a thought that directs them toward an action. They developed this
negative impression about them (Ilonggos) which are clearly baseless and illogical.
Based on the dialogue, these members regard themselves more superior than Jennifer
who is an Ilongga and who just transferred in her new school. Having this
negative idea at the back of their mind, these members treated Jennifer harshly
and this is how prejudice becomes bias.

The Club Meeting

Setting: At the school Characters: Grade 9 students; officers of English Club

Member 1: Can we, now, please call the meeting to order? It’s getting late.
Who will preside? Member 2: Anne messaged me earlier… she won’t make it here today.
Member 1: Okay, then. Since our President wouldn’t be able to be with us,
I humbly volunteer myself to preside the meeting.
Member 3: Are you sure? You were not present in our last session, so how can you possibly preside over the
meeting now…where we must discuss crucial parts of our project? You’re not even the vice president,
right?
Member 4: In addition to that, she has no idea of the concept and I believe she can’t contribute to it for she’s but a new
student here. We don’t even know, yet, where she lives.
Member 1: Oh, I am terribly sorry…but I didn’t mean to cause any trouble here. All I thought…and
wanted…is to make the most of the time we have because we are running short of time.
Member 3: Let’s make this clear…once and for all. I don’t like you. I hate your accent; I hate how you dress up; I even
hate your smile. How can I buy your ideas? Oh, my!
Member 1: Yes, I speak this way because I am an Ilongga and I am proud of it. I don’t see anything wrong
with that. As I said, I am sorry if I caused trouble here.
Member 2: Alright! That’s enough. Lets get started. I, being the Vice President, will take over the meeting.
So, lets call the meeting to order.

After everyone had the chance to speak, Jennifer stands and...

Member 1: May I speak and share my ideas for

this project? I think I exactly know how this plan would go because in the school where I came
from…we had the same project and it turned out quite well.
Member 3: When you moved here, you left your old school somewhere in Iloilo. So, don’t try to imagine
that people here will be listening to your jokes. Right guys?
Member 2: Being your Vice President, I believe that we all need to hear every idea that may secure the
success of our project…may they be ideas from here or from other parts of the country. So, I
would be glad to here what you’ve got to share Jennifer. Do we agree on this,
guys?
Everyone: Yes, Vice!
Member 1: Thank you Vice! Please allow me to share my experience from my old school where I served
as president of our Book Lover’s Club for more than a year ‘til I left our project there still on
progress and they say its doing good. So, you see…..

Everyone listens to her as she convinces them that the project will flourish.
