Related Studies

Based on the article “Food Carts: The Ultimate Small Business to Start in

the Philippines” (2015), the food cart industry is described as today’s top small business

to enter in the Philippines. This is due to the reasons of the easy set-up and requirements

needed in order to start this kind of business and its good way for entrepreneurs who want

to test the ‘business waters’.

The market trend in the country also shows that engaging in the food cart

industry is one of the top options of entrepreneurs (Gelo, 2015). Food carts having the

history of being usually in the local streets has already evolved over time. With the stiff

competition in this industry, new marketing strategies were introduced, and one of this is

incorporating mobile with food carts to allow traveling form one place to another.

According to Flores and Koski (2015), the term food cart is used to describe mobile food

trucks and stationary carts (often called trailers) that generally remain in one location for

an extended period of time and may be one of several carts, trailers, or trucks used to

form a food cart pod. According to Malabaguio (2014), to start a mobile food cart

business, one can start on a low capital ranging from Php 30,000 to a maximum of Php

300,000. It all depends if it is a franchise or owned, and the vehicle to use. For the past

years, the low capital outlay has attracted entrepreneurs to try this business. Considering

the aesthetic designs it also offers, mobile food carts has also become an expression of art

and unique creativity, in which technology is also incorporated for it not to be left behind.

Industry Review

Food cart industry is a business where you can start on low capital ranging

from P30,000 to a maximum of P300,000. But it could be a little lower though,

depending on how you will put it up — by franchise or on your own. Some companies

offer food cart franchise for as low as P10,000 per package that includes, the cart,

product, uniform for the crew and training. Over the last few years, food service carts

have sprouted all over the country from public terminals, malls, sidewalks, church,

schools, markets etc. Today, there are about 800 different food cart formats available in

the market–pizza, waffle, street foods, beverages, rice toppings, baked goodies, rice in a

box, hotdog and a lot more. Industry estimates that more than P1 billion in sales are

turned over every year from the food cart businesses. With this amount, no doubt that

Food Cart is the hot business in the market. This number alone shows that Filipino people

have truly cultivated a keen interest in this type of business (Malabaguio, 2014). This is

due to the fact that people are looking for the easiest way to satisfy their hunger in a

convenient and affordable.

The proponents of the study come up with an idea to introduce “Fruggies

Snack Cart” in the market that is health-friendly snack cart. The snack cart that will offer

snacks not only cares for your health but also satisfies your cravings.

Key Driver

Fruggies Snack Cart is a business offering healthy benefits to your health.

Each product is made with high-quality and organic ingredients. Nowadays we are

experiencing pandemic and lots of people became conscious to their health, that’s why

most of them wants to have some healthy alternatives for their foods and snacks.

According to our survey about 77.3% of respondents are conscious to their

health and about 73.5% find fruit and vegetable snacks as an alternative for junk foods.

With this kind of thing, the role of healthy snacks has evolved for consumers.

Convenience has been the key drivers for increased healthy snack consumption.

Fruggies Snack Cart: Key Driving Factors

 Consumers that find fruit and vegetable snacks as an alternative for junk

foods can support the rise of business in the market.

 Convenience of healthy ready-to-eat options

 Access to attractive options

 Evolving taste buds

Key Barriers

A big organization or business is more secure compare to the small type of

business. A new recipe will attract potential customers and some people who are willing

21
ASIA PACIFIC COLLEGE OF ADVANCED STUDIES

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTANCY

to try new food menu. The problem is how to keep it in the market and constantly excite

the people. Building a strong brand will create confidence to consumers but most of them

are loyal to the existing brand. In that case new brand would have to spend more money

on advertising to create its own brand loyalty.

To sustain a business, a constant market research has to be done by

understanding consumer behaviors and their demands. Without deliberately interrupt the

potential customer, the process should be simple and will not take a lot of time. The

capital requirement is solely depended to the sized of business. A person who doesn’t

have knowledge of running a business specifically in food will probably fail. In food

business, the risk is huge as there should be responsible for taking health and safety for

the food offering as well as hygiene. Owners need to make sure that every customer has

the safe food to eat.

Since it is a food business potential customer may encounter a lot of perks.

Loyalty card is one of the examples; it is used to record the stamp for every purchase of

food product. When the customer reached a specific number of stamp they will get a free

product from the business. This kind of perks is a tactic to attract customer return and buy

product. Potential customer will constantly comeback because they will feel that they are

gaining more benefit from buying a same product in a place rather than the other shops.

scope of market Fruggies snack will cater. In terms of location or area coverage, the

target market will be the SM Balanga City, Bataan that soon to be open. It is the best

place to operate the business because it is near at school and terminals.

Competition

Businesses exist in a competitive environment. Food Cart are in fierce

competition with each other to provide the best possible value for money high quality and

appetizing snacks, and to offer the most suitable range of products for their customers.

Some consumers today are aware of their health but some are not specially

kids nowadays that most of them are not into eating fruits and vegetables. And as

concerned individuals, we offer snacks that are benevolent in use and consist of dietary

from the vegetables that store our daily nutritional needs the Fruggies snacks. Within a

market businesses are faced by direct competitors. These are firms that produce the same

or very similar goods. Regarding to our consideration about our competition, we consider

small snack cart because it will threat in our business. However, most products are

differentiated in some way.

Nowadays, shakes and fries are big hit in the market so our competitors

are Fruitas and Potato corner. They already established their brand image to the minds of

the consumers. They also offer different kinds and flavors of shakes and fries with a

competitive price.

Demand and Supply Analysis

Since the business targets the SM Balanga City, Bataan. The demand

projection made for the service offered was all considered carefully. In evaluating market

opportunities, the researchers need to consider the market’s total demand to identify what

will be the customers’ response to the proposed business. On the other hand, the

population in Balanga City is increasing as time goes by, in this case the demand of the

proposed business will also increase. Supply and demand is fundamental concept of all

economic insights and the foundation of the majority of modern economics. The basic

theory states that the market mechanism of supply and demand will result in an

equilibrium price for a goods or services such that there will be equilibrium between the

cost of the good to society as well as the benefits if the good to consumer.

Competition Analysis

Businesses exist in a competitive environment. Food Cart are in fierce

competition with each other to provide the best possible value for money high quality and

appetizing snacks, and to offer the most suitable range of products for their customers.

Competition typical Snack Cart is commonly offered in streets. They are really

noteworthy about their profit and customer satisfaction, but not into making the

community health wise. The fact that the value of its snacks is affordable yet it consists

of what our body need is somewhat deceiving ourselves.

Within a

market business are faced by direct competitors. These are firms that produce the same or

very similar goods. Fruitas and Potato Corner are classified as the direct competitors

because they also target the same market and almost same products offered. With regards

to our consideration about our competition, we consider small snack cart businesses as a

threat in our business because they also target the same market and offers snacks and

beverages. Jollibee, Greenwich, Mc Donald’s, KFC, and other small cart are classified as

indirect competitors. However, most products are differentiated in some way.

Marketing Strategy

Fruggies Snack Cart is a first mover in the market by being the first to

introduce the product which is apple fries in the city of Balanga. Being first typically

enables a business to establish strong brand recognition and customer loyalty before

competitors enter the arena. Other advantages include additional time to perfect its

product or service and setting the market price for the new item.

To reach the target customer group, we use a mix of the following

marketing methods: social media, exposition/trade fair and in-store sampling. Expect to

continue to increase media impressions as they strive to build deeper relationships with

their customers. We believe marketing represents an opportunity to create additional

competitive advantage and brand awareness.

Exposition/ Trade fair

We will join trade fairs to increase awareness of the existence of our

business. This would also give us the chance to showcase the goodness of our product.

We will have free taste of our product and we will also sell our product if people would

love to buy.

We can also use the “Viral Marketing” strategy that uses existing social

networks to promote a product. Its name refers to how consumers spread information

about a product or brand with other people in their social network, much in the same way

that a virus spreads from one person to another. It can be delivered by word of mouth or

enhanced by the network effects of the internet and mobile networks. This strategy is

very beneficial to the proposed business, because it will spread the name of the brand to

people that are not reached by the business’ other marketing programs, thus this kind of

marketing will get free advertisements from people.

Social Media

Integration to social media can create dynamic, measurable ways to

engage the community and drive bottom-line results. We will create fan pages on

websites, such as Facebook, to start marketing our product online. Often post interesting

information about our product, entertaining stories, comments to continually draw

interest from consumers. Place ads on Facebook to attract even more consumers to our

fan page. We could also have fun games, surveys, contests and customer testimonials.

Price

The prices of the Fruggies Snacks will be dependent on how the market

price of the main ingredients is. Any change of the price of the Fruggies Snack products

will be taken into consideration to the factor that measures the consumers' capability to

purchase the product.

Our product is competitively priced and is very affordable for consumers

to buy. Taking into account the extreme health benefits our product can offer, we are very

sure that their money will be worth spending on consuming our product and making it as

a staple on their healthy diet.

CHAPTER 4

BUSINESS SCHEDULE

This chapter discusses the financial aspects of the study, in order for a

business plan to understand it needs money to start. To determine whether the future

industry will remain profitable through the existence of competitors and unfavorable

economic condition, the researchers have to project a three-year financial statement. This

chapter includes the source of funds, balance sheet, income statement, cost of goods sold

and cost of sales.

The table below is the project timetable of the business. It starts from

conducting feasibility study of the researchers of the project, followed by putting up

equity, then processing of legal requirements and the lease of contracts. And after that,

canvassing and acquiring of equipment to be followed by hiring and training of

employees. Next is canvassing and purchasing of raw materials and preparing of all the

operation materials. And then we proceed to the promotional campaign and then opening

of the business. Lastly, the normal operation will start.
