Contemporary

Art
HISTORY

*The newest form of art, from the

middle to the late 20th century up
to the present.
*Emerged during the start of
postmodernism, around the late
1970’s, as a reaction to the previous
art period called modernism.
Contemporary Art vs. Modern Art
1.Time period
Modern art-late 1800s and
continued to grow for more or
less a century. It waned in the
middle to late 20th century when
postmodernism came to light.
Postmodernism Contemporary art
*Contemporary means “with the
times” (con tempo). Thus,
contemporary art refers to the art of
the present time.
2. Styles and Techniques
The artwork of the
Impressionists, Cubists and
Surrealists are samples of
modern art
The reason that this genre of
art is known as “modern” is that
it does not follow on from the
past styles.
3. Subjects
*Both uses modern issues and
personal thoughts as subjects.
However, many believe that
contemporary art is more socially
conscious.
Eg. Feminism, globalization,
migration, and environmental concerns
*In contemporary art, the process of
making art received more attention than
the final product.
