Objective
Understanding how measuring gauges, instruments, and equipment operate and
using them is the objective.

As long as there has been civilization, measurements have been made. A nation's
economic and social progress depends on metrology. It focuses on delivering
precise measures that have an influence on our economy, health, safety, and overall
well-being.

Introduction
Metrology is "The science of measuring, covering both experimental and
theoretical determinations at any degree of uncertainty in every sector of science
and technology".

Materials and Tools

1. Surface plate
Surface plates are a basis for inspection, toolmaking, gauging, spotting,
marking, and layout. They are flat and level surfaces used as a horizontal
reference region for dimensional measurement. They can be created from glass,
cast iron, metal, granite, or metal alloys.

2. Vernier caliper
A measuring tool used to take linear dimension measurements. With the aid of
the measuring jaws, it is also used to determine the diameter of circular objects.

3. Screw thread Micrometer

To measure the thread pitch directly, a screw thread micrometer is usually
employed. A double V-shaped swiveling anvil and a 60-degree pointed spindle
are features of the screw thread micrometer. The thread pitch diameter is shown
by the screw thread micrometer measurement.

4. Outside Micrometer
are employed to gauge the thickness or outside diameter of tiny components.
Because of their great accuracy/resolution and simplicity of use, they are
considered industry standard measurement equipment.

5. Inside Micrometer
The inside micrometer is used to determine the interior diameter of objects
connected by walls, cylindrical bores, or hollow pipes. Inside Micrometers
come in two different varieties. Micrometer inside of an analogue type. Inside-
type digital micrometer.

6. Depth micrometer
An instrument called a depth micrometer is used to assess the depth of recesses,
slots, and holes. A measuring rod is put into the hole that has to be measured by

depth micrometer. The rod is gradually lowered till the base of the recess is
reached.

7. Precision square
Precision squares are used for precise marking, measuring, and ensuring that
machined parts are square. In a machine shop or inspection room, cylindrical
squares are used to verify other squares because of their hollow, cylindrical form.

8. Thickness Gauge
A thickness gauge is a tool used to determine a material’s thickness rapidly and
conveniently. Although there are numerous sectors that might benefit from
thickness gauges, engineering and manufacturing are the ones that utilize them the

most frequently to make sure that material thickness conforms with set norms and
laws.

9. Height gauges
On a granite surface plate, height gauges are often used to measure and/or scribe
part characteristics relative to a datum plane. The measured feature is often located
using a scriber, test indication, touch probe, or CMM-style probe. Height gauges
are a crucial piece of equipment for quality assurance.

10. Radius gauge

Manufacturing Technology I January 2023

A tool for measuring the radius of a curved item is a radius gauge. It is employed
to gauge the sizes of tools, dies, and wooden templates. Dimensions are read
visually once the gauge has been immediately put to the item.

11. Pitch gauge

For determining the pitch of a thread on a screw or in a tapped hole, thread pitch
gauges are used as a reference tool. Instead of being employed as a precise
measurement tool, pitch gauges allow the user to rapidly classify the thread by
form and pitch and identify the profile of the provided thread.
