● Minor of an element aij of a determinant is the determinant obtained by

deleting its ith row and jth column in which element aij lies. Minor of an

Inverse of Matrix
A square
If Z matrix

then = a – ibif there exists a square matrix B of
the same order such that,

AB = In = BA

In such a case, we say that the inverse of A is B and we write, A–1 = B.

Clearly if A is non-singular (i.e. |A| ≠ 0) then A–1 is defined, and is given
by

A–1 = × (adj(A)) Note: A–1 × A = I

If A is an invertible square matrix; Then (A)T is also

Property 3 invertible and (AT)–1 = (A–1)T

Property 4 The inverse of an invertible symmetric matrix is a

symmetric matrix.

Property 5 | A–1 | = | A |–1 i.e.| A–1 | =
|A|
36
12th BOARD: MATRICES and DETERMINANTS
Proof of Uniqueness of Inverse of matrix
If Theorem:
Z = a + ib then Z = a – ib
If there exists an inverse of a square matrix, it is always unique.

Proof:
Let us take A to be a square matrix of order n x n.
Let us assume matrices B and C to be inverses of matrix A.
Now AB = BA = I since B is the inverse of matrix A.
Similarly, AC = CA = I.
But, B = BI = B (AC) = (BA) C = IC = C
This proves B = C, or B and C are the same matrices.

2x + 4y + 6z = 12
3x + 6y + 9z = 22

Here, D = 0
Also, D1=D2=D3 = 0
