Good day future scientist! I hope all is well. Prepare yourself because today you will
showcase your creativity and originality.
During your elementary level, I am sure that you already
discuss the concepts of living things and non-living things. The knowledge you gained about
living things and non-living things are your starter pack on our lesson in this learning guide.
Lesson 6 is about the components of an ecosystem. Let us make this lesson simple by
identifying and defining the components of an ecosystem.
Abiotic factors refer to nonliving physical and chemical elements in the ecosystem.
Abiotic resources are usually obtained from the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere.
Examples of abiotic factors are water, air, soil, sunlight, and minerals.
Biotic factors are living or once-living organisms in the ecosystem. These are obtained
from the biosphere and are capable of reproduction. Examples of biotic factors are
animals, birds, plants, fungi, and other similar organisms.
Look at the picture of a pond ecosystem below. Name the Biotic and Abiotic
Components present on this ecosystem.
1
Biotic factors have been divided into three main categories, which define their distinctive role in the ecosystem:
1. Producers (Autotrophs) - these are photosynthetic organisms (capable of making their own food) that
are dependent on the organic matter.
2. Consumers (Heterotrophs) – organisms that are feed on other organisms.
2.1 herbivores (eats plant only)
2.2 carnivores (eats animal only)
2.3 omnivores (eats both plants and animals)
2.4 scavengers (eats dead animals or plants)
3. Decomposers (Detritivores) – organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms.
YOUR TASKS!
Enrichment Activity 1: Differentiate biotic from abiotic components of an ecosystem Place the words inside the box
on the appropriate circle where it belongs. (1 point each)
Enrichment Activity 2: Study the picture below. Identify three (3) biotic and three (3) abiotic components in a farm
ecosystem. (1 point each)
Biotic Abiotic
2. Go outside to your backyard and find a good place to sit and observe.
3. Spend 10-15 minutes writing down as many biotic and abiotic factors that you can see!
