OBJECTIVES
By the time we are finished with this topic you will be
able to:
Define or describe the System.
Identify the Weather system associated with the
system.
Where in the Caribbean would it likely be affected
by this system.
What time of the year does this system affect the
Caribbean.
How does this affect the people or the
environment
What adjustments or measures is made by the
people in the Caribbean to lessen the affects of
the system

weather map

DEFINE OR DESCRIBE THE SYSTEM

Easterly waves also called an Tropical wave, African easterly

wave, or Tropical disturbance, easterly waves are often
developed within the prevailing northeast trade winds. These
waves are called a trough and is oriented in a north to south
direction. A trough is a elongated region of relatively low
pressure. Easterly waves move from east to west across the
Caribbean regions at 20-35km per hr.

(N.B. The trade winds are winds that reliably blow east to west
just north and south of the equator and tend to be strongest
in the eastern Pacific.
You have three parts of the wave.
The center being the most important
IDENTIFY THE part which is the trough which is the
WEATHER axis of the wave. The west of the
trough is a zone of divergence and
ELEMENTS to the east is a zone of
ASSOCIATED convergence. Convergence is the
inflow of air from a point that leads
WITH THE to air rising at a surface and this
SYSTEM causes cloudy skies, rain and at times
Add instructions or thunderstorms. Divergence is the
guidelines here. You outflow of air which results in it
can also put in the becoming less humid. The sky is less
amount of time cloudy and the weather is fair. As
allotted for this. the wave gets closer, conditions will
begin to change, the wind get’s
stronger and often start blowing
from the east, forming clouds and
bringing light rain.
WHERE IN THE
CARIBBEAN WOULD
MOST LIKELY BE
AFFECTED BY THIS
SYSTEM
The southeastern region of the
Caribbean is usually affected by
tropical waves.
Eg. Trinidad and Tobago
Barbados
St. Vincent and Grenadines
A Map
WHAT Tropical Waves occur
TIME OF regularly from May to
November, there is generally a
THE YEAR parade of theses waves which
DOES THIS emerge off the coast of
Africa these waves will then
SYSTEM get carried in an overall
AFFECT westward motion Across the
Atlantic. That will take four
THE days to pass a point.
CARIBBEAN?
How Does this System
affect the people and the
environment?
The immediate effects of strong
winds and high rainfall can cause
bridges to be destroyed as well
as buildings, which can cause
peoples homes to be destroyed
and leave people stranded with
nowhere to go. Power cables and
telephone lines drop down which
can lead to power outage and
crops will be destroyed which can
cause damage to the agricultural
sector.
What
adjustments or Some precautions that people in the
Caribbean would make:

measures is
Evacuating persons from flood-
Prone areas
Cleaning the garbage From the
made by the gully's to prevent flooding
Cutting trees to prevent them
people in the from flying and destroying
property
Caribbean to Securing homes by battening
windows to prevent damage to
lessen the property
Stock up on Water ,Food,
affects of the Kerosene oil to use in case of loss
of water supply and power

systems? outages
LESSON FOR THE DAY

Discussing a lesson as a class certainly boosts

students' interest and engagement. Aside from
helping them stay focused, it allows them to
think deeply, create connections, and get
different perspectives on the subject matter.
