1) INTRODUCTION OF THEODOLITE TRAVERSE

Theodolite traversing is a technique used to establish control points by

measuring the distances between traverse station and the angles between
them. These control points serve as reference points for surveying an
construction.
The angles are measured by theodolites and the distance can be measured by
using electronic distance measuring equipment. Theodolites in traversing
survey is one of the most common methods in engineering work to get the
provision of control surveys, angle measurement and detail mapping.
Theodolite is an instrument used for measuring horizontal and vertical angles.
Vertical angles are required for the calculation of elevation of points, for
example the reduction of slope distance to the horizontal. Horizontal angles
are required to obtain the relative direction to a control point or station of
detail. It gives accuracy to 1’’.
In this field work, we only consider the horizontal angles and distances in
closed traverse. In a closed traverse the angle measured either interior or
exterior. Generally closed traverse in clockwise direction. The successive lines
are measured and the bearing of the starting line is observed. The bearing of
the remaining lines are then found from the observed bearing and the
measured angles. Traversing by this method is done either. The angle can be
measured by repetition so as to desire degree of accuracy is obtained.
2.0 OBJECTIVE

- To compute the area of traverse

- To reduce the field data, adjusting a traverse and plot the results
graphically
- To find the elevation or height of a pole or building indirectly
- To enable students to get hand-on experience in setting up and working
with theodolites and collect the data of the relevant fieldwork
- To enable students identify the error and make adjustment to the data
- Determine the error of closure and compute the accuracy of work
PROCEDURE OF WORKS
There are several steps which should be followed that will lead to a smooth traverse.

There are several steps that should be followed to ensure a smooth traverse:

1. Four pickets (stations) were established at the proposed site

2. The theodolite was plumbed over peg 2 and accurately leveled, while wooden stands were
plumbed over pegs 1, 3, and 4.

3. Level and center the instrument.

4. Set the theodolite to read zero (00 0’ 0’’).

5. The distance was measured by collimating the center of peg 1 using a measuring tape. The reading
was taken and entered in the field book. The distance between pegs 2 and 3 was also measured
using the same technique.

6. Record the face left horizontal reading to the back station (peg 1).

7. Turn the instrument and sight the front station.

8. Record the face left horizontal reading to the front station (peg 3).

9. Transit the instrument to change to the face right setting.

10. Record the face right horizontal reading to the front station (peg 3).

11. Turn the instrument to face the back station.

12. Record the face right horizontal reading to the back station (peg 1).

13. The theodolite was moved to peg 3, and wooden stands were plumbed over pegs 4 and 2. Peg 2
was sighted on the face left with the theodolite set to the reading taken from step 10.

14. Peg 4 was sighted, and the horizontal angle was taken. The instrument was set to face right, and
peg 4 was sighted again. Then peg 2 was sighted, and the reading was taken.

15. Steps 13-14 were repeated on peg 4 and peg 1. All readings were observed and recorded

CONCLUSION

Throughout this report, I appreciate this opportunity to learn about the total
station procedure. In this total station work, we enable to know how to
measured the vertical angles and horizontal angles of theodolite and gain
knowledge of how to handle the equipments during the field work.Theodolite
must be centered on the point using plumbop. In a nutshell, special thanks to
our lecturer ,Mrs Noorhaneza bt. Ariffin and Mrs Azrina bt Ahmad for helping
us by providing guidance and instruction to carry out this field work until
complete.
