INTRODUCTION

In many Caribbean countries, there are pockets of poverty as well as high levels of
unemployment. The link between these two is therefore an important one to study. In order to
facilitate analytical work in this area, the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean recently
commissioned a statistical study of ''the working poor'' covering eight countries: The
Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and
Tobago. The term poverty refers to the state or condition in which people or communities
lack the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. As such, their
basic human needs cannot be met. Poverty-stricken people and families may go without
proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
How does poverty affect the Caribbean countries?
REASONS FOR SELECTING TOPIC

The researcher's reason for selecting this topic is in view of the fact that poverty is
tremendously affecting Caribbean countries and exploring this topic would aid in our
awareness of the reasons why, and preventative measures to reduce poverty, another
reason would be the increasing rate of unemployment and homelessness and these are
linked closely with poverty, in fact, these are the causes of poverty, another reason is
to find out the reason and stories behind the people on the street and what could be in
a person's mind that they enjoy laying a cardboard on pavement and sleeping
comfortably?
METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

The researchers found their information by using twenty questionnaires to gather the
necessary information. The researcher chose a questionnaire because it has been
proven to be one of the most effective and successful instruments for acquiring data.
These questions include open and close-ended questions and biographical data. The
researchers proceeded to share the questionnaire in the community of East
Ruimveldt to investigate the main reasons for families that are experiencing poverty

Interpretation and Analysis of Data

In figure 1 the pie chart above is showing the causes of poverty unemployment is the major
cause of poverty which is 65% and Lack of education which is 20% while social injustice 8%
and Lack of Government support 7% are the least cause of poverty.

In figure 2 the bar graph is showing that 71% of the people suggest that keeping a decent
job-paying good would reduce poverty life while, 28% say having good education will reduce
poverty and 1% say selling drugs will reduce poverty which I highly disagree with.

In figure 3 the table shows the age range of persons living in poverty. Majority of the
population living in poverty are young persons who are between the age 18-25 and 30-45
while persons who are between the age 25-30 and 45-50 are hardly living in poverty.

In figure 4 the table shows 3 YES or NO questions from the questionnaire, the first question
(Does poverty affect young individuals?) 87% of the population say yes and 13% of the
population say no. The second question (Do you think individuals choose to live in poverty?)
Majority of the populations say no which is 57% while 43% say No. The last question (Can
poverty lead to juvenile delinquency?) Many people say no which is the most voted one
which is 53% while 47% say yes which least people agreed to.
