ACTIVITY SHEET IN SCIENCE 8

Grade: 8 Week: 1 Quarter: 3

Name: _______________________________________ Grade and Section: ____________________________

I. Objective: Explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases based on the particle nature of
matter.

II. Presentation of the Lesson:

All matter is particulate in nature, which means that all matter is made up of tiny bits of
material known as a particle. Matter is made up of tiny particles which was conceived by Democritus,
a Greek Philosopher.

Democritus conceived the idea of pounding up a material until he can no longer reduce the
material into much smaller pieces. Democritus thought that all materials are made up of tiny particles,
he called these particles as atoms which comes from a Greek word “atomos” which means indivisible.

All matter is made up of tiny and indivisible particles called atoms, these particles are
constant random motion. Moving particles have kinetic energy, as these moving particles gain energy
their speed also increases. Transfer of energy between particles occurs when these particles collide
with each other. Movements of particles are greatest in Gases, less in Liquids and Least in Solids.

Matter is anything that occupy space and has mass. Mass is the fundamental property of
matter. Matter has three states which are Solid, Liquid and Gas.
