32
HOW TO CONDUCT SIMPLE
Lesson
SURVEY USING
1 TECHNOLOGY AND OTHER
DATA-GATHERING METHOD
Nowadays, we often hear “trending” and “trendsetter”. These two words summarize
the meaning of anything popular to the people. Usually it is in music, fashion,
skincare products and even platforms where you can see these words.

How do these products set the trend? Were these products just placed there and earn
public’s attention or was there a trick how they were able to make it to the top list?

In this module, you will learn some of the basics on Market Trends and determine
how you will know the preference of the majority and set your products on trend.

Most common products raw materials that can be seen in the market are Bamboo,
Wood and Metal. You have learned in the previous lessons that there are different
products that can be made from these raw materials.. So, before we get started, let’s
categorize the following product.

What’s In

Can you identify them all?

Which of the following products can be made out of Bamboo, Wood or Metal? Write
your answers inside the computer monitor of the corresponding raw material.
Answers may be repeated if applicable.

33
A. Directions. Answer the question below.
a. How many products can be made of:
i. bamboo? ____________________
ii. wood? ____________________
iii. metal? ____________________

Notes to the Teacher

Trending is the most common word to describe the popularity of an object, an
artist, or even a product nowadays. Trendsetters are those people who are either
very active in social media which either share and flood your news feed with
that of their interest and be able to set products on trending. Most people are
being carried away with these trending products and social issues. Just a
friendly reminder, validate and know the source. Just so you know, “Think,
Before You Click!”

What’s New

Beng and Nhess will be participating in their school’s Bamboo, Wood, Metal Trade
Fair. They have been thinking of the products that they will bring to the fair and
assure that these products will swipe-off the trade. However, they can’t decide on
which of these raw materials would make the best trade for the fair.
What should they consider?
How should they choose?
Is it their own preference?

34
What is It

Let’s help Beng and Nhess in their quest to determine which product they shall
bring at their School’s Trade Fair.
Have you seen the following scenarios anywhere?

These are some of the media where we usually refer to Market Trends.
Picture A shows Direct Marketing. Direct Marketing is usually done in trade halls,
convention centers, and even in malls nowadays. The aim is to demonstrate,
describe, and exhibit products of the producers to motivate and persuade possible
consumers or buyers of their products.
Picture B is an example of Print Media Advertising. Print Media Advertisement is
any detailed written information of a product that has been beautifully lay-outed in
a paper or informatively displayed in a newspaper section relevant to the product
that a producer sells. It contains the details, producer and location where the
product can be sold. Some examples of print advertisement are in newspaper,
magazines, flyers, and pamphlets.
Picture C is an example of Television Advertising. This kind of advertisement uses
television and other technology such as radio and internet. Producers of the

35
product signs contract to television, radio or internet providers to promote their
products. These providers (entertainment and information) make use of artists to
endorse the products of their partner producers. Nowadays, this kind of
advertisement is known to be the modern way of product endorsement.
Picture D is an example of Distributing Products via Transport. Through this kind
of advertisement, products reach the consumers faster through the means of land,
air, and sea transportation, spreading promotion and feedback even in the farthest
region in the country.
However, there are also other reasons that makes a product “trending” or placed in
Market Trends. It depends on some of the following customers and their
preferences.

These customers are just a few to name all the “trendsetters” nowadays.
You can also be one of them if the producers can convince you with their
products and make way to any of the kinds of advertisement discussed
above. Some of the strategies these producers use are the following:

a. offering free delivery c. retouch services

b. repairs d. special promotions

Apart from the stuff I've listed so far, there are meticulous customers
who look at how they've finished the items of their interest.

36
Here, take a close look at some of my finishing materials, accessories,
and designs that could help Beng and Nhess decide what products they
're planning on bringing in at the trade show.

1.Shellac – it’s an honest finish for several projects. It comes from the
excreta of insects called a luc bug.. The color is yellow, and appears as
tiny cellophane pieces. It is combined with denatured alcohol before
application

2. Varnish – it is another finishing material that beautifies and preserves

a projec It is made from dissolved copal gum in pure, boiled linseed oil.
Copal gum originates from pine resin buried several feet below the ground
Linseed oil comes from oil of cotton seed. When varnish becomes sticky
and hard, add turpentine to form it thin and usable again. Varnish and
turpentine are sold in cans and bottles.

3. Paint – it is another finishing material that is always used

because of its beautiful colour and a good protector of materials. The
paint body is a combination of four elements: pigment, engine, thinner,
and drier.. It comes in cans of different sizes. If the paint is sticky or
rough, apply a thinner to the paint. If no more thinner is available, using
petroleum or gasoline as a substitute

4. Lacquer – this is a synthetic product which is largely used in all

manufactured articles. This finishing material may sustain the natural
color of the material it is being applied to. It is sold in containers and
bottles, including varnish and shellac. The solvent used is lacquer
thinner.

5. Stain (Tina) – stain is colouring material which is applied to the

surface of a wood to improve its appearance. Three types of stain are
present: oil stain, water stain, and spirit stain..

When the dye (tina) is combined with petroleum, the result is oil stain.
The dye is now water stain when mixed with water. The mixture is
called spirit stain, when the dye is mixed with alcohol.

The coloring is sold in boxes or in kgs. Spirit stain is ready mixed. It is

sold in cans and bottles. Such stains are often applied using brush,
spray, or cotton fabric.

6. Sandpaper – it is made grits, usually, ground silica, flint, quartz,

or emery glued to thick paper or cloth. Sandpaper for wood is called
flint paper, and we actually have waterproof abrasive for metal which

37
is called emery cloth. All of these are used to smooth rough material
surfaces.

7. Glue – glue is a paste for wood materials. It is in powder or in

cake form. It is manufactured from fish, animals, and plastic resin.

These materials are used to beautify, decorate, and improve the

standard of finished products.

1. Finishing materials like varnish are used to smoothen the products

before decorating.

2. Colored paper twines and ribbon cloth are used in decorating and
wrapping products.

3. Beads and charms are small accessories of different colors used to

make products attractive.

4. Abaca and sinamay fibers are paper-thin locally made materials used
for wrapping or packaging purposes.
So, there you have it. We may now help Beng and Nhess to decide on
which of those products (bamboo, wood or metal) they should bring to the
Trade Fair.

Huh? You still want more? Specific examples?

Hmmmmm ... Well ... But this one is only for Bamboo. Bamboo Products
Method and treatments completed.

BAMBOO TREATMENT

1. Preserving and Treating Bamboos. There are many ways bamboo is

handled to maintain its natural beauty. It is called the resin-oil extraction
method. It is done by either wet or dry process.
a. Resin-oil Extraction (Wet Process)
b. Resin-oil Extraction (Dry Process)

38
2. Bleaching is the process of whitening or removing the colour by
sunlight exposure, air ventilation or by the use of chemical solutions.

3. Dyeing is the process of applying colour into the materials. The process
of direct tinting or reactive dyeing can be used.
a. Direct dyeing, bamboo splints make sure of vegetable dye. It is
done by boiling water with dye and soak splits of bamboo until the
desired color is reached. They are dried under the sun.

b. Reactive dyeing, the following materials are used: 30% of

dye; salt is 30 grams per liquid and fixing agent is 30 grams per
liquid. The coloring is dissolved in water, then reduced to the final
level. The bamboo splints are soaked for10 minutes then salt is
added and dyeing is sustained for an hour.

4. Pyrograph is the process of burning designs of bamboo with hot

wire. The electric soldering iron is known as the best pyrography
device.

39
What’s More

Have you figured it out, what kind of material: Bamboo, Wood, and
Metal would Beng and Nhess for the product they would bring to the
Trade Fair?
You can check on the following activities I have prepared to help you
out. Choose one (1) from these activities that you can be best of while
staying at home.
Wud-Activity Number 1:
Directions. Read each item carefully and perform accordingly.
1. Ask the following questions to all the people at your house or
compound:
a. What kind of product do you prefer? Bamboo, Wood or
Metal?
b. What is your basis in choosing a product you chose in the
first question? Color, Size, Style, Quantity, Interest or Adopts
to New Design Trends?
c. What finishing material you would want to use for your
chosen product? Shellac, Varnish, Paint, Lacquer, Stain (Tina),
Sandpaper, Glue or a combination of two of the given
choices?
2. Take down all their answers and make a pictograph for each of
the questions you asked (see sample at Answer Key page).
Wud-Activity Number 2:
Directions. Read each item carefully and perform accordingly.
1. Are you a Facebook, Messenger, Twitter or Instagram user? Then
let your friends be heard. Make a poll for the following questions:
a. What kind of product do you prefer? Bamboo, Wood or
Metal?
b. What is your basis in choosing a product you chose in the
first question? Color, Size, Style, Quantity, Interest or Adopts
to New Design Trends?

entrepreneurs. Most customers choose products which are different from anyone
else’s stuffs. In this manner, they may have something that they could be proud of.
2. the customer’s interest and needs. Craft buyers may say that innovated and
improved materials/products are always interesting so it is important to keep on
making ways to improve your products.
3. that your products are saleable at any given time. Durable products may last a
long time. It is also necessary that customers know that they can buy such items
anytime of the year.
4. that your customers are satisfied with your products. If they liked the products,
they would probably buy more and would recommend them to other people.

51
What I Have Learned

Fill in the blanks with the appropriate words to complete the idea of the paragraph.

Enhancing and decorating products have positive effects on the marketability

of the finished products. If the products are
_____________________________, they may look _____________________________.
Beautiful products ________________________________________. Enhanced and

their TLE subject. Be sure to find all the things that will help them in order to reach
their destination. Group the enhancing techniques according to where it should be
used. Write your answers to the space provided below.

62
What is It

Do you still remember the crossword puzzle that you have answered a while ago?
Were you able to find out all the words in the puzzle? Let us try to recall all those
words and find out how it works to enhance a product.
In this part, you will know and understand all the techniques that MARLA and
MARLO encountered in their trip and how these will help them in enhancing their
EPP project.
These are the different techniques that will help you enhance your wood, bamboo,
and metal products.
Woodcrafts and Bamboo Enhancing Techniques

1. Woodturning is a process of using a lathe to make various forms and

shapes of wood.

2. Hand carving is considered a woodcraft in which a sharp object is

used to create designs on the wood. Using this technique, different textures
and surfaces can be created. Tools such as chip carving knife, gouges, and
chisels are used.

63
4. Pyrography is considered an art using a fire or heat to decorate wood
or leather.

5. Flocking technique lines the interior of drawers and boxers with a soft
velvety finish.

6. Inlaying combines several techniques that involve inserting decorative

pieces in to a base object to incorporate new designs on the original product.

64
7. Gilding is considered as a decorative technique in which powder is
applied on wood or other materials to give a thin coating of gold. Methods of
this technique include gluing, chemical gilding, and electroplating.

8. Staining is used to color wood to give an illusion of texture. This may

come in two varieties. First, pigment-based stain will color large pores of the
wood, while dye-based stain color small pores of the wood.

9. Painting is considered the simplest way of decorating wood since there

is a variety of colors that you can choose from. One may also add a lacquer
finish for a shinier and glossier effect.

65
Metalcraft Enhancing Techniques
1. Engraving is a metal enhancing technique wherein transferring of
designs is done using a hardened steel tool called burin or graver to cut into
the surface of the metal.

2. Etching is a process wherein an acid that produces corrosive action is

used to make designs or pictures on a metal plate. Strong chemicals are used
on other types of material in modern manufacturing.

3. Adding metal enhancing media such as metal paints, copic markers

and antiquing kits give color to the metal product. Metal paints may be
applied using a brush or spray. Copic markers usually used by an airbrush
system that can be refilled. Meanwhile, antiquing kits are also known as rust
and /or patina kits that are available in crafts store. It creates a rust design
on your
product.

66
4. Making image transfer though not an easy technique, has two ways
to do it. The first use a transfer medium called an Omni gel and the other
uses a waterslide decal. Images are transferred on the metal clearly using this
technique.

5. Texturing and embossing is a technique wherein you will need

hammers, metal stamps, stencils, and other materials to create imprints on
the metal. Though there are new technologies used to emboss a metal with
different textures, a hammer and nail can still be used to create your own
design.

6. Resins can be used to create wonderful crafts. Resins are usually made
with powder and chemical that produce a clear liquid. Thus, it should
be used rapidly since it hardens and dries up easily. It may contribute
to the products special texture, design and it may act as covering to
protect a design on your metal sheet.

plan first before making a project. It serves as your guide because it gives you a brief
overview of the project. A project plan also tells you the things to be done, how much
money you are going to spend, the kind of materials to use, and what kind of project
you want to create. Let’s take a look at the order of tasks in creating a project plan.

 Write down your objective by considering the benefits that you

will get out of it
 Identify the materials needed
 Itemized the steps to do before you start the project
 Prepare the tools and equipment needed
 Set a timetable indicating how long you want to finish your
project
 Sketch or draw the project design
 Set the criteria for the assessment of your product
 Evaluate the finished project

However, there are THREE things you have to consider in constructing a project plan.
These are as follows:

Project Plan

Sustainable Options for Packaging

Health and Safety Measures
Development and Labeling

In using natural resources as a source of raw material for your project, you should
consider the policies and principles of sustainable development. Make sure that
social equity is not compromised as well as the integrity of the environment.
Moreover, in pursuing economic efficiency, it has to come with ecological and social
responsibility.

Considering your health and safety is a must when doing your project. That’s why
we listed things that you should keep in mind while following the procedure in your
plan.

1. Focus on the task.

2. Use working clothes or an apron and comfortable one for you to
be able to move freely while performing the task.

77
3. Prepare all materials, tools, and equipment required before
starting the project.
4. Place the equipment beyond the reach of younger children and
keep your things orderly.
5. Read and follow carefully instructions on the use of chemicals.
6. Use safety goggles to protect the eyes from harsh chemicals.
7. Use appropriate tools for the task.
8. Avoid leaving the containers of glue, varnish, rugby, and other
liquids uncovered.
9. Be careful in handling sharp objects to avoid injury.
10. Clean and keep the tools and equipment in their proper storage
after using them.
11. Clean and wash your hands after working.
12. If ever you get hurt or injured, immediately inform the teacher so
that you can be given first aid treatment. Always remember, SAFETY
FIRST!

Aside from sustainability and safety, you should also consider the packaging and
labeling of your product. Both are important for your product’s marketability.

When we say marketability, it talks about your product’s saleability and fitness to be
offered in the market. Your product must be competitive in a way that it can catch
the consumer’s attention. It is the reason why most companies invest time, effort,
and resources on their product’s packaging and labeling. Both are considered part
of the overall “marketing strategy” to further promote a product. Also, it will help you
inform your costumers about your product’s qualities.

Here are some functions of packaging according to Lamb, Hair, and McDaniel (2008):

1. Contain and protect the product;

2. Promote the product; and
3. Facilitate the storage, use, and convenience of the product.

A fourth function has also made mention that increased in importance in recent
years: to “facilitate recycling and reduce environmental damage.”

On the other hand, labeling has 2 purposes:

1. Providing important information about the product (content,

features, instructions as to its usage, manufacturing information, special
care and safety information, and the like)
2. Promoting the product with the use of branding, and attractive,
colorful marks Having been oriented with the important considerations in
project making, here is an example of a project plan that you may study.

Lesson

1 Marketing the Products

Filipinos love to eat. This is why the food business in one of the most lucrative
businesses in the country. Producing and selling preserved or processed food can
provide additional income for the family. Like any other product or service, however,
a good marketing strategy and program can help create awareness of the product or
service in turn, boost sales.
In this lesson, the factors that affect the sale ability and marketability of the product
will be taken up. It will also discuss the ways by which your product can be packaged
so that it does not only protect the product but also helps increase it marketability.
The first thing that attracts the customer to a product while he or she is shopping is
the packaging. Depending on the type of product, the packaging is usually plastic
or glass jar usually showing the product so customers can easily see what they are
purchasing. This lesson will also present the use of technology in advertising a
product.

88
What’s In

In this activity, you will notice that there is a relevance to our lesson. Let’s find out if
you will get it fast!

Which of which? Name the following pictures. Choose your answer inside the box.

89
90
What’s New

Are you ready for our next adventure? Let us join Cazzy and Randyll as they take a
“Product Hunting”. What are the things that you can buy inside the supermarket?
Name the things as many as you can.

91
What is It

Now that you have reached your destination with the help of your teacher, can
you tell me what are the things that you have encountered in the “Product
Hunting”. What are the ways or techniques we can used to market the product
using the technology?

These are the technology in marketing the products:

1. Internet – have become business necessities when it comes to
marketing products. The medium allows for plenty of room to share
product details, reviews, photos and videos that engage potential
customers. Announcements often go out through online services and
media stories, while blog posts and word of mouth can drive traffic to
a website. Businesses not only can announce products, but also can
sell them directly to customers all over the world. That reach stretches
far beyond what a local newspaper ad can achieve.

2. Email marketing – Email marketing is one of the most affordable and

potentially engaging ways to market a product. Businesses that have built up
opt-in email lists have a large base of customers who already are interested
in the products they offer. Email marketing is an ideal way to announce new
offerings, distribute coupons or discounts and share information on
products. Many email marketing campaigns have evolved into digital
newsletters, in which product marketing integrates with compelling content.

92
3. Mobile – Mobile marketing involves reaching costumers on their cell phones
and other mobile devices through text messaging and applications.
Businesses can usetext messages to send special coupons or deals to people
on a marketing list. While some businesses develop their own branded
applications for smartphones , many piggybackon existing applications that
offer space foradvertisements or coupons geared for local users. For example,
a business may maintain a profile on a socila media smartphones application
that gives usersa 20% discount if they try out a new product at the store.

4. In Store – Technology is making its presence known in store. The use of

digital signage is a trend that allows businesses to capture the attention of
costumers and market specific products to them. This is particularly helpful
for restaurants and other businesses that need to respond to changes in
inventory or introduce a new product on a regular basis. Advanced point of
sale system can give employees realtime information on what products are in
stock or help them tracks costumer’s preferences. Providing excellent
customers service is a key to successful sales and marketing.

5. Social Media – Social media is both a major opportunities and a great

challenge for businesses when it comes to product marketing. It can be quick
and easy way to communicate information on new products to a large group,
but businesses have to be careful to attract customers rather than talk down
to them. Businesses should look at social media as technology thae enables
the age-old marketing technique of word of mouth. Create a compelling social
media experience, interact with costumers and encourage them to share your
product information with others.

93
Computing for the Cost and Profit

How would you know if you earned or not? First, you have to compute the total
cost of the product. Then compute for the mark up in order for you to earn
profit. The excess amount less the cost is the profit.

Example:

Product 1

Php 50.00 – is the cost

X 20% - Mark Up
Php 10.00

Php 50.00 – Cost

+ 10.00
Php 60.00 – Selling Price

94
What’s More

A. Let’s practice what you have learned. In this activity you are going to identify the
different tips to succeed in business by fill in the missing the word. Use the
description at the right as your guide.

B. In the next activity, I will give you an item-problem, choose only one product and
draw /label the packaging; how will you market the product using internet? Choose
from the following social networking sites. Explain your answer.

Make your own list of materials and the cost how you come up with selling price.
Then find out the profit that you get. Are you ready?

95
C. Based on your answer in Exercise B, find the profit earned. Write your answer in
each item number.

Example: You want to make a basic medicine cabinet and you decided to sell it with
a 20% mark-up in addition to your capital or cost of expenses.

Assessment

A. If the statement is correct, write true; if it is not, write false but write the word(s)
or phrase to make true.
1. You can use any packaging material you want.
2. You do not need to add mark-up to get the selling price.
3. Place or location is necessary in conducting a business.
4. The role of traders is to act as the link the producer and distributor.
5. You do not need a capital if you want to sell some preserved food for a livelihood.

B. Consider the following guided questions. Write your answer on ½ crosswise paper.
a. What do you need to consider in packaging your products?
b. How are you going to market your product?
c. How do you compute the cost and selling price of the finished product?
d. How you will know if you are earning or not?
