OBJECTIVES:
a. Integrate knowledge comprehended and acquired from associated modules of the course.
Associated modules include Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete Design and CAD,
Virtual Construction Simulation & CAD, etc.
b. Cultivate team spirit and team work through working with team members;
c. Practice technical skills, quality consciousness and time management;
d. Develop initiative, creative thinking and innovative ideas;
e. Plan, organize and write a group project report.
INTRODUCTION
In this assignment, you are given Figures 1 and 2 which show respectively the roof plan and a
section view of a single storey steel building. The roof plan and section view are extracted from
the construction drawings of the real world building. Your tasks for this assignment are described
as follows. Please refer to Figures 1 & 2 for the layout of the structural elements.
TASKS
You have to form yourselves into groups with maximum of four students in each group to work on
this assignment. Your group is required to carry out the tasks as outlined below.
Based on the loading information provided below, you have to do manual calculation of dead
and live loads applied to the joints of the truss that you have chosen for your group. Self
weight of a member must be transferred to the joints at both ends of the member. You must
show the detailed beak-down of load components and work out the combined load for both
Ultimate Limit States (ULS) and Serviceability Limit States (SLS). You may need to refer to Table
1 in Part 3 for the information of truss member size for calculation of member self-weight.

• Create the truss allocated to your group using Autodesk Robot Structure 2022
• Analyse the truss using Autodesk Robot Structure 2022 for the following loading
combinations: i) 1.35DL+1.5LL; ii) 1.0 LL.
• Extract and tabulate the axial forces of each member from the Autodesk Robot Structure
2022 analytical results under load combination of 1.35DL+1.5LL.
Where DL represents the dead load and LL represents the live load.
i) Determine the number of bolts for every joint of the truss members. Assume that all the
truss members are connected to 12mm thick gusset plates by means of
M16/M20/M24/M27 black bolts at both ends.
ii) Check the adequacy of all truss members and roof purlins based on the most critical
analysis results under Ultimate Limit State (ULS) of Loading Combination of 1.35DL+1.50LL.
You must show your workings in detail.
iii) Check the maximum vertical deflection (Δmax) of the truss under Serviceability Limit State
(SLS) of load case 1.0LL, and do the deflection checking according to the following criteria.
Assume Young’s Modulus E=205 kN/mm2.

The trusses allocated to groups in a class for project work are shown in the table below:

You have to use Revit Structure to create 3D model of the single storey steel building. You
may assume the sizes of the truss and the thickness of steel base plates that are not
designed by your group. Please refer to Table 1 for making assumptions for the member
sizes of the trusses that are not designed by your group. The 3D model should include the
following elements:

Design Information:
a) Loadings: Eurocode 1: Actions on structures - Part 1-1: General actions - Densities, self-
weight, imposed loads for buildings.
b) Design Codes: Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures - Part 1-1: General rules and rules for
buildings.
c) Material Data: Refer to Table 1.
Note: You should make and justify your assumptions if any information is not provided.
