 Most Fires are caused by, People, Electricity, Spontaneous combustion and Unsafe handling of liquefied petroleum gas.
 Firstly – What is fire?
Fire is actually a BI – Product of a larger process called combustion. Fire is a result of rapid combustion.
 Secondly – What is Combustion?
Combustion is a self-sustaining process of rapid oxidation of a fuel which produces heat and light. Combustion is a chemical
reaction or series of chemical reactions where heat and light are involved.
 How is fire caused by spontaneous combustion?
Oil soaked rags, Split oil saturating combustibles, leaving cans or tins of certain oils open, Oxidizing agents left about,
compost heaps, coal heaps.
ACTION ON DISCOVERY OF A FIRE:
 Sound the alarm.
 Notify colleagues verbally.
 Notify fire Prevention officer.
 Notify Fire department.
 Never shout or cause panic.
Evacuate the premises. Have people leave in an orderly manner. Have the people gather at the assembly point.
ATTEMPTING FIRE FIGHTING:
 Ensure you have appropriate equipment and enough back up.
 Test heat on the door with back of hand, when cold, keep low and behind the wall when door is opened.
 Do not ventilate the area. If attempts to put out the fire seem futile, rather get out.
 Arrange someone to meet the fire department.
HOW TO MAKE THE ALL-IMPORTANT CALL TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT:
 Know the telephone number for the fire department.
 Stay calm, speak slowly and clearly.
 Give your full name and the telephone number where you are phoning from.
 Tell the person who you are talking to what the problem is.
 Give the details of the address and area where you are.
 If it’s an office block give the name.
 Tell the person if anyone is trapped.
 If possible, what is burning?
