Biosynthesis of Membrane Lipids
I. Objectives
A. To understand the key processes and enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of membrane
lipids.
B. To investigate the essential functions of membrane lipids in cells, such as providing
structural integrity to cell membranes, serving as energy storage molecules, and participating
in cell signaling processes.
C. To discover the regulatory mechanisms that control the biosynthesis of membrane lipids,
including feedback loops, enzyme activity, and the influence of cellular conditions.

3. The biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids requires the presence of molecular oxygen.
4. The enzyme acyltransferase transfers a glycerol molecule onto a fatty acid to initiate
phospholipid synthesis.
DIRECTIONS: Read the sentence or paragraph provided, which contains blanks, choose the
appropriate word or phrase to fill in each blank.
1. Label the following parts of a Phospholipid in the boxes provided: Two fatty acid chains,
glycerol, phosphate group and choline. Identify which part of the molecule is polar
(hydrophilic) and which part is nonpolar (hydrophobic).
DIRECTIONS: Fill in the blanks with the appropriate words or phrases related to the
biosynthesis of membrane lipids. Once you have completed the worksheet, you can find the
answers below.
