RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Recreation
Recreation is derived from the Latin word “recare”, which means to be refreshed.

Recreational activities
Recreational activities are things people do for fun and enjoyment in their free time. It relaxes your mind and body. It
relieves your day-to-day tension and a Universal need of man. It is a form of activity, an attempt of self-expression,
resulting from man’s urge to be active and to use his facilities and equipment. It is through recreation that man finds his
satisfaction of desire to achieve, share, create, win, find approval in his expressed personality.

Leisure
Leisure is defined as the productive, creative or contemplative use of free time. Leisure and recreation are two very important
aspects of our life because they provide an opportunity to refresh our mind, discover and develop our talents and to make
friends.

Characteristics of recreation

1. Recreation involves an activity


The concept of activity for recreation depends in action done mentally, physically or emotionally.
2. Recreation has no single form
There is so much flexibility on the part of the person on his choices from the wide range of activities.
3. Recreation is determined by motivation
The individual determines his activity largely by a desire, motive or incentive. His goal remains as enjoyment and
satisfaction.
4. Recreation occurs in unobligated time
A recreationist should be aware of defining clearly to what time he or she partakes the leisure activity.
5. Recreation is participated voluntarily
There can be no imposition of by force taken in recreational activity.
6. Recreation is universally sought and practiced
Activities for recreation is extensive that they encompass the total human being regardless of sex, race and
nationality.
7. Recreation is Purposeful
Anyone involved in recreational activity has a purpose in securing satisfaction and pleasure.
8. Recreation is Flexible
Recreational activities can be organized or unorganized.
9. Recreation has By-products
The best motivation for an individual to do recreational activities is “reward” after an activity either physical health,
emotional stability, or social fitness

Benefits and values can be derived by engaging in Different Recreational Activities

• Reduce the feeling of anxiety or depression
• Enhance relationship skills
• Improved focus, increase cultural diversity
• Promote community engagement, and develop holistic potential

TYPES OF RECREATION
1. Physical – using movement and strength; example- Sports, Group Games, Camping, Outing.
2. Social – participated by group of different people like Social Dancing, Parties, Fun Run.
3. Cultural – activities which embody or convey cultural expressions, irrespective of the commercial value they may
have like arts and crafts, theatre arts.
4. Intellectual – activities with predominantly cognitive efforts, whether they are conducted in groups or alone like
reading, puzzle, board games

CLASSIFICATION OF RECREATION: (HERO, N.D.)


1. Spectator and Participant
Spectators are people who spend their time watching the event and derive enjoyment from it. Participants are
people who do not gain enjoyment merely by watching; they do so by joining the activity.
2. Active and Passive type
Active type is when people must function effectively in performing the action. Passive type is when people have
no excessive movement in performing the task or action.

3. Physical and Mental


Physical activity is when people exert effort and bodily functions in performing the action. Mental activity is when
the mind is doing the functions with less body movement.

4. Public, Private and Commercial


Public type involves the public, while private type is confined to people working in a private company.
Commercial type is endorsing products which are open to everybody.

SCOPE OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES


1. Indoor recreation
When the activity is within the premises of your comfort zone at home or inside a building. Examples are Board
and card games, parlor games, playing musical instrument, baking, Hobby and Collecting Activities.
2. Outdoor recreation
When the activity is undertaken in a natural, or open space, outside the confines of building, usually large land
area that is close to nature. Example are hiking, fishing, outdoor sport.

Relationship of health behaviors (eating habits, sleep, and stress management) to health risks factors and
physical activity assessment performance in recreational activity are:
1. Health Behavior-Eating behavior – sleep and stress management could affect the behavioral aspect of a
person of doing such recreational activity. Eating too much could result to obesity affecting physical activity. Lack
of sleep is also associated with eating disorder and contribute with stress. This condition will affect the result of
physical activity assessment performance.
2. Healthy Eating Habits in Recreational Activity- this refers to eating a wide variety of food in its right amount to
give nourishment to our body. It provides energy you need to perform in any recreational activity and keep you
active through the day. The nutrients are needed for growth and development, helping an individual to stay
healthy and strong and help prevent illnesses and disease.
