Ratio &

Proportion
Presentation by Group 6
Ratio
- Is the comparison between two numbers or
quantities with the same units.

Example:
Q: so how are we able to write the ratio of
triangles and squares?
Ratio can be expressed in FOUR WAYS:
1.) 2:3 (colon form)
2.) 2 to 3 (phrase/word form)
3.) 2 ÷ 3 (division form)
4.) (Fraction form)
Proportion
- Is the equality between two ratios. If
ratio a:c & c:d are equal. The proportion can
be written in two ways:

a:b = c:d or , where b ≠ 0, d ≠ 0

- if b=0 and d=0 it will give us undefined.

- where a, b, c, and d are "Terms".
2:15 = 6:45
Means

Extremes

Means - inner numbers of the proportion.

Extremes - outer numbers of the proportion.
a:b = c:d
product of means
product of extremes

Equals, ad = bc
Fundamental Law of Proportion
- The product of the means is "equal" to the
product of the extremes
Example:

10:5 = k:4
1st step: (Multiply)
Example:
10:5 = k:4

2nd step: (Divide both sides)

Properties of
Proportion
Partitive Property
-In this proportion, the quantity is divided
into two or more parts based on the given fixed
ratio of the part.
Cross Product Property
-if the product between the two means and the
product between the two extremes are equal the
ratios are proportional.
Means Extremes Property
-the product of the Extremes is equal to the
product of the Means.
