Lesson 11 : Algebra

Algebra – a branch of mathematics that deals with symbols and rules for manipulating
those symbols

 Variable – letter that represents a number

- x, y , z – most commonly used in Algebra

 Term – a constant, a variable, or a product or a quotient of constant and

variables
- separated by the symbols + and –

 Constant – number with fixed value

 Coefficient – when a number is next to a variable

 Algebraic expression
- a variable, a constant, or a combination of both which may be related by any
of the four fundamental operations

 Like Terms – terms with the exact same variables that have the exact same exponent

ex.

 Unlike terms – terms with different variables and exponents

ex.

 Degree of Algebraic expression – the highest exponent value of any its term

ex.

 Classifications of Algebraic Expression

1. Monomial – an algebraic expression with one term

exs.

2. Binomial - an algebraic expression with two terms

exs.

3. Trinomial - an algebraic expression with three terms

exs.
4. Polynomial - an algebraic expression with more than three terms
