Activity Title : Visible Light versus UV Light
Learning Target : Explain why we get easily sunburned in ultraviolet light but not in visible light,
and how we see colors.

Visible light
 It is the small part within the electromagnetic spectrum that human eyes are sensitive to and
can detect.

 It consists of different wavelengths. It ranges from 700 nm at the red end of the spectrum to
400 nm at the violet end.
 Objects appear in different colors because they will absorb some colors and reflect the others.
Whatever color the object reflect or transmit is the color we see in the object. Objects that
appears white reflects all colors, while black objects absorb all colors where no light is
reflected.
UV (Ultraviolet) Light
 refers to the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X-rays. There wavelength falls
between 400 and 10 nanometers.
 Sun is a main source of the full spectrum of the ultraviolet radiation. It is responsible for
causing us sunburn. Since UV light has higher frequency than visible light, therefore it has
higher energy.

Materials Needed:
Lotion Laser or Flash light
Flame lighter White bond paper
Leaves Black construction paper

Set A. Set B.
1. Put a lotion to whole part of the 2 leaves.
1. Point the laser or flashlight in the white bond
2. Expose the leaf in the sun and the other
paper.
to the flame lighter. 2. Point the laser or flashlight in the black
Note: Avoid playing with fire. The flame

represents UV light. Note: NEVER point a laser at someone's eyes
no matter how low the power of the laser
Guide question: Which leaves damage Guide question: Did you see light with white bond
faster? paper? How about with the black construction paper?

Conclusion: Based on the activity, explain why we get easily sunburned in ultraviolet light, but not in
visible light, and how do we see colors? Write your answer on the space provided.
