Textbook page: 230
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to
:
1. State the characteristics of the image formed by a
plane mirror.
2. Communicate about the LAW OF REFLECTION
3. Draw ray diagrams to show the reflection of light.

Steps to Draw A Ray Diagram
(must use your ruler!)
LET’S TRY!:

1. Draw a straight mirror plane.

1) i= 45°
2. Draw an incident ray that touches on the plane. 2) i= 60 °
3. On the touched point of your incident ray-to-
plane, draw a normal line perpendicular to that
point.
4. Determine the angle of incident (i) from incident
ray to normal line.
5. Based on the angle of incident (i) draw the
reflected ray by using the same value of the
angle. Mark your reflected angle as (r).

8.4 Refraction
of Light
Textbook page: 233
Learning Objectives

• Refraction occurs when light moves through medium of different

densities.
• Draw ray diagrams to show refraction of light when light propagate
from one medium to another medium of different densities.
• Relationship between the angle of incidence, i and angle of refraction,
r when light travels from a medium of low density to a medium of high
density.
• Applications of refraction of light in daily life.
Definition
Refraction of light is a
phenomenon of bending of a
light ray when it enters a
medium with different
density.

Answer: Double rainbow
When sunlight enters rain droplets in the sky, the air
droplets will act just like the prism. The white light will
be refracted and dispersed into seven different
colours to form a rainbow.
So, can you suggest other situations
based on light dispersion concept?
Scattering of
Light
On midday, the sky appear blue but it
turns to reddish in the evening.
Scattering of Light
This two phenomena are caused by the scattering of light.
Scattering of light occurs when light is reflected in all directions by
clouds or particles in the air.
Back to The Light Spectrum

• Blue light has

shorter and
smaller waves
compared to red
light.

• Thus, blue light is

easily scattered
by the particles
in the air.
During midday
1. During midday, blue light is scattered the most in all directions by the tiny
particles in the atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colours because
it travels as shorter, smaller waves. That’s why we see a blue sky during
midday.
During sunset
• The sun is at horizon.
• Red and orange light are less scattered and will go through the
atmosphere to reach your eyes.
• Other colour lights such as blue light are scattered away because of
high amount of dust in the evening.
• That’s why the sky looks reddish during sunset.

8.7 Addition and
Subtraction of
Light
Textbook page: 241
At the end of the lesson, students
should be able to:
• Identify primary colours.
• Identify the addition of primary colours to produce secondary colours.
• Communicate about substraction of light.
• Record the colours formed on the screen when light passes through colour
filters.
• Differentiate the addition and substraction of light.
• Explain addition and subtraction of light in daily life.
Primary Colour in Light
• Have you ever heard the RGB terms in computer?
RGB stands for Red Green Blue. These colours are primary colour in
light.

• Primary colour is the basic colour that cannot be produced through

colour mixing.
Addition of
Light
Mixing of two primary colour to
produce secondary colour.
Secondary Colours
1. When two primary colours are added together, secondary colours will
produced.

Blue + Green = Cyan

Red + Blue =
Magenta

Green + Red = Yellow

R+ G + B =White
Subtraction of
Light
Substraction of Light

Why we can see colours on opaque objects?

Subtraction of Light
• This phenomenon in known as
subtraction of light.

• When light hits the opaque

objects, some of the light will be
absorbed by the object while the
other colours will be reflected to
our eyes. The reflected light
gives colour to the objects.
Principles of Light Subtraction
-There are four principles for light subtraction.

1. Primary colour

2. Secondary colour
