PHYSICAL SCIENCES – FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT–2
LAB ACTIVITY

Aim : To get distilled water.

Apparatus required : Conical flask, water, single holed rubber cork, Bunsen burner,
glass tube.
Precautions : i) Glass tube should tightly fit into the single holed rubber cone.
ii) Carefully arrange the conical flasks and glass tube.
Procedure : • Fill the conical flask with water, close it with a cork having
hole.
• Insert a glass tube through the hole.
• Take another conical flask with a cork having a hole and
insert another glass tube through it.
• Connect both tubes with a plastic tube.
• Now heat the flask containing water using a burner.
• After sometimes, water vapour goes into the second conical
flask through the glass tube.
• Water vapour will slowly turn to water.
• The water in the second conical flask is called distilled
water. It is free from impurities.
Result : In the laboratory we prepared distilled water.

PROJECT WORK

Name of the student :

Class :

Topic :

Date of Submission :

Name of the project : Different separating techniques.

Objectives : i) To know about different separating techniques in our daily life.
ii) How to use different separating techniques in different situations.
Procedure : Threshing : • The process of separating grains from stalk.
• Stalks are beaten to free the grain seeds.
• Sometimes, threshing is done with the help of
bullocks and also machines are used to thresh
large quantities of grains.

Winnowing : • This method is used to separate constituents of

solid – solid heterogeneous mixtures when are
kind of particles are very light compared with
other.

Hand picking : • This method is used to separate constituents of
solid – solid heterogeneous mixtures when the
constituents to be separated are visible and
having difference in physical appearance such
as colour.

Crystallization : • Heat some salt water in a beaker, over a flame.

Stir the solution with a glass rod. Continue
heating till all the water in the beaker has
evaporated.
• We find salt crystals and powder in the dish.

Conclusion : • We observe different separation techniques and

their daily life applications.
Resources : • Information gathered from different books and
magazines and also collected from internet.
