ABSTRACT

The purpose of this report is to descript about design and installation of Fire Alarm
System during my three months internship took place at D&C SOLUTION. Fire Alarm System
is really important to protect in the hole of the building to be safe. Fire Alarm System has two
type such as addressable and conventional. In this project of Data Center, we use addressable
connection for installation because addressable system is given us convenient to check which
one is broken. Moreover, it is easy to maintenance and also in one loop we can add the tool over
100 items. In addition, the scale of building is big that why we choose addressable connection.
Although it was expensive, the results are fit to the price that we spend. Therefore, after
internship I have learnt a lot about Fire Alarm System and other skill related to MEP.

I. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Problem Statement

In the field of electricity, there are many different divisions. MEP is also an important part in
the field of electricity that is indispensable and also actively contribute to the construction sector
as well. Fire alarm systems can be the most essential elements of any building’s life safety
systems. Not only do they save countless lives every year, they often regulate other systems in
the building and property owners save huge amounts of money by reducing damage to their
structures. Let’s review the components of different fire alarm systems and how each can
influence safety and function.
Fire Alarm system have many equipment to flow in order to process. A fire alarm system
warns people when smoke, fire, or other fire-related emergencies are detected. These alarms may
be activated automatically from smoke detectors, and heat detectors or may also be activated via
manual fire alarm activation devices such as manual call points or pull stations. Alarms can be
either motorized bells or wall mountable sounders or horns. They can also be speaker strobes that
sound an alarm, followed by a voice evacuation message which warns people inside the building
not to use the elevators. Alarms can be either motorized bells or wall mountable sounders or
horns. That is make to who is in the building know and go away from the building and
extinguish the fire on time. Fire alarm sounders can be set to certain frequencies and different
tones including low, medium, and high, depending on the country and manufacturer of the
device.
Almost of Fire Alarm System use in the modern building, market, school, factory. Etc. there
are two types of connection in Fire Alarm System.

• Addressable system
• Conventional system
a). Conventional System
Conventional system is a normal system that have before addressable system. This system
cannot tell us which detector detect or which area have problem, but it determines exactly
location that called zone. It means all detectors are connect from one to one and at the end of its
is connected with resistance. it cannot run only one cable of detector likes smoke, heat, manual
call point with bell, strobe light in one circuit. It will sound the alarms when they sense a fire, but
can only provide a limited amount of information. Conventional fire alarms are ideal for small
buildings, such as individual offices or retail shop. They go off individually when they detect
smoke or heat and will help everyone escape from your building safely and quickly.

1
Figure1. 1. Conventional System

• Operation of conventional system

Conventional fire detection systems relay information via analog electrical currents. Most
rely primarily on smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations to detect a fire. These
initiating devices are divided into different zones based on their location in the building. Doing
so helps first responders locate the source of the alarm during an emergency.
When an initiating device activates, it sends an electric signal to the main control panel. When
the control panel receives one of these signals, it springs into action. Most will trigger
notification appliances to sound audible alarms and contact the fire department. Some also
trigger fire suppression systems such as fire sprinkler systems or door locks to contain the fire.
Conventional fire alarm systems can’t identify which specific initiating device triggered the
alarm. The control panel will see which zone sounded the alarm, but these zones often include
large areas of a building. Because of this limitation, conventional fire alarm systems have largely
been replaced by addressable systems. However, the low cost of conventional systems makes
them a viable option for a variety of building owners.

2
b). Addressable System
Addressable fire alarms are a necessity for large building complexes or campuses.
Addressable System is a system that popular to use in fire alarm system nowadays because of
this system is convenient to inform the all information clearly. Which detector detect and every
detector is confirmed where they detect. Located where is the cable connect from one to one, it
calls Loop. Easy to find which one does not work and their located. If that, other detector still
works as normal and specially need short hours to repair. Addressable fire alarm systems are
typically more expensive than conventional alarms, but the extra information they provide to
firefighters and building managers is invaluable.

Figure1. 3. Addressable System

• Operation of addressable system

An addressable fire alarm system works by having every detection and notification device connected
to each other and to the addressable fire alarm control panel. An addressable system sends digital
signals in binary code, as opposed to a conventional fire alarm system which operates through electrical
currents. This allows for an addressable fire alarm system to transfer critical information to the control
panel with a broader range of information.
Addressable fire alarms can also relay information about the density of smoke, the intensity of heat, and
more. This information can help inform escape routes and alert the fire department as to the degree of
danger. With fire safety, every second counts, and the more information available, the easier it is to
keep damage to a minimum The precision of addressable fire alarm systems.
• Components of Addressable

For processing addressable system, we need all components such as:

▪ Smoke Detector
▪ Heat Detector
▪ Manual Call Point or Break Glass

3
▪ Alarm Sounder with Strobe light
▪ Control Module
▪ Mimic Panel (Serial annunciator LCD)
▪ Motion Sensor (Bean smoke detector transformer& Bean smoke detector Receiver)

❖ Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of your home to detect rising smoke from
a fire. They should be placed inside or directly outside of each bedroom and common areas, and
in laundry rooms, public area and kitchens where fires can originate. To reduce false alarms
when cooking, consider installing smoke alarms at least 10 feet away from any kitchen
appliances. If you have a larger home, you’ll want to consider more alarms, that are situated in
hallways and stairways. It’s best to install smoke detectors that can be interconnected so you’ll
hear the alarm no matter where you are in your home. Appliances, If you have a larger home,
you’ll want to consider more alarms, that are situated in hallways and stairways. It’s best to
install smoke detectors that can be interconnected so you’ll hear the alarm no matter where you
are in your home.

Figure1. 4. Smoke Detector

❖ Heat Detector

A heat detector is a fire alarm device designed to respond when the convicted thermal
energy of a fire increases the temperature of a heat sensitive element. The Heat detector is used
to help in the reduction of damaged property. It is triggered when temperature increase to very
high. Heat sensor usually take longer to respond to a fire than smoke detector

Figure1. 5. Heat Detector

4
❖ Break Glass

A Break Glass Call Point is a device which enables personnel to raise the alarm by
breaking the frangible element on the fascia. They should be mounted 1.4m from the floor and
sited where they can be easily seen. Manual Call Points should be sited on the floor landings of
stairways and at exits to open air. It should be noted that Call Points should be fitted on the floor
side of an access door to a staircase so the floor of origin is indicated at the Control Panel. Extra
points should be sited, where necessary, so that the greatest travel distance from any point in the
building to the nearest call point does not exceed 30m. A greater number of Call Points may be
needed in high risks areas or if the occupants are likely to be slow in movement. Flameproof call
points are available, also handle operated points for use in areas where broken glass may cause a
hazard.

Figure1. 6. Break Glass

❖ Control Module
Control Modules are used to Control third party inter-facings like Elevators, Access Doors,
HVAC systems, etc. in case of an Alarm in FACP.

Figure1. 7. Control Module

❖ Alarm Bell

Alarm Bell Sounder is a device which is related to break glass system, when break glass had
broken alarm bell is ring to alert people to know and come out before had something wrong. And
it is stay nearby break glass.

Figure1. 8. Alarm Bell

❖ Horn Strobe

System Sensor Horn Strobes are rich with features guaranteed to cut installation time and maximize
profits. Intended for full building notification as well as on the property ground, they produce a loud
sound to notify occupants to evacuate the buildings; the strobe is intended to notify those that may
have a hearing impairment.

Figure1. 9. Horn Strobe

❖ FACP

FACP is the important tool because its cover all of fire alarm system. It is responsible for
controlling and transmitting signals and controlling all activities of the device in order for the
alarm system to operate. Power supply source of FACP has two types:
✓ Processing of control panel that use for long time, its from EDC 230v. then convert from
AC 230v control panel to DC 24V for charge emergency battery (DC 24v).
✓ Processing of control panel from emergency battery DC 12v because it is series. We use it
when no power from EDC. This battery can use two-three days and its pause when EDC
work.

❖ Alarm Control Panel for addressable

FireWarden-100X(NFW-100X) is a modern system that show the location of detector work

clearly. All detector has name address. For install FACP, we need to choose the wide location for
easy to install and repair and make sure no wet, low temperature and sunlight.

Figure1. 11. Addressable FireWarden-100X(NFW-100X)

❖ Type of Cable

Every component is uses the same of cable that show in figure1.12. except only alarm bell, that have
three fibers. This cable is better to protect from fire because we cannot use the normal cable in this
system. It called Fire Resistance Cable that can be heat resistant until 80% with 2.5mm^2. For alarm
bell, we use cable with 1.5mm^2.

9
II. Design Fire Alarm System

When we start to design and apply to architect plan, we need to discussion with other
team likes architecture and then take a plan from them to design and insert an items of
addressable that we need to use into plan. And then we get a tender drawing for improving. After
that, if it has something wrong, we need to change and redo then we call shop drawing. And we
can start to installation in the building. In this project, we choose addressable system to protect
the whole building. So, I focus only addressable system.

a). Design addressable System

All components of addressable system at DATA CENTER are descripted.

2.1. Smoke Detector

Smoke Detector is installed on the ceiling of the building. Surface of detector is detected
as a circle with radius 7.5m. That is 10.6m x10.6m =112𝑚2 and 5.3m from the wall. So, from
one to one is 10.6m.

Figure2. 1. Show of the surface of Smoke detector detect

For the walk area that have a small width and long length, we install smoke detector 7.5m
maximum from the wall and distance from one to one is 15m maximum.

10
Figure2. 2. Show of the Surface of Smoke detector detect in walk area

2.2. Heat Detector

For Heat Detector, it is installed on the ceiling as Smoke Detector. Surface of detector detect
as a circle that have radius 5.3m and the surface detect is square. That is 7.5m x 7.5m=56.3𝑚2
that from one to one is 7.5m and have the distance to the wall is 3.8m.

Figure2. 3. Show of the Surface of the Heat detector detect

11
One more thing, if it has lighting near the detector. We should install it far from lighting by
using formular (z x 2) that z is a distance from ceiling to lighting.

Figure2. 4. Show the Distance between detector and lighting

In case of the distance between detector and beam, if have a split of room into part. We need
to install at least 500mm.

Figure2. 5. Show the distance between detector with beam

2.3. Manual Call Point

To installation of Manual Call Point, In general we install it near the stairs, common area or
which place that people know and easy to press to alert. Where is the high 1.4m and width 12.2
m.

12
Figure2. 6. Manual Call Point

2.4. Alarm Sounder with Strobe and Light

For alarm bell, we always install on the fire safety gate and place that make sure people can
hear and know when its ring. The high is 2m to 2.1m.

Figure2. 7. Alarm Bell

For bedroom, we should take a sound on 90dB which can make us to wake up. The maximum sound
level should not exceed 120dB.

Figure2. 8. Indicates the sound signal level across the wall

13
2.5. Control Module

For control module, we need to install it on the wall and distance 0.2m from the ceiling.

Figure2. 9. Control Module

2.6. Motion Sensor

It is installed on the wall that have the high 6.850m to 7.5m from the finishing level.it has
two sensor such as beam smoke detector receiver to the wall and beam smoke detector
transmitter to the wall. Two this sensor connection by signal.

15
III. Installation and Maintenance

3.1. Installation

Every material is different from each other. The location for all materials is important before
starting to do, Here is the way how to install of all tools that we will use.

a). Smoke and Heat Detector

Before installing detector, we need to know about ceiling or high on the wall. verify
communication with control panel.

• Choosing all detector that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory
Special thing, we need to connect the leg of tools to ceiling, then connect the wire from the
FACP with those tools. For wire S+ to leg S+ and wire S- to leg S- of those smoke or heat.

Figure3. 1. How to installing detector

Figure3. 2. How does it works and connect from one to one

16
b). Manual Call Point

we have two types of installation:

• First: we can install as a surface

• Second: install as a recessed in the wall, but the way how to connect the wire is the same,
their legs is installs on the wall.
After we install the tools, we start to connect the wire by using Miniature Contact Module for
convert signal from conventional into addressable because Panel of Addressable FireWarden-
100X that we use for building cannot use with Manual Call Point of Addressable. Thus, we use
Miniature Contact Module to convert the signal for fit the FACP and tools.

Figure3. 3. Addressable for Manual Call Point

The connection point are specified on labels of Addressable Manual Call Points. Loop line ”+”
cable should be connected to the “+”terminals, loop line”-”cable should be connected to the “-
” terminals.

Figure3. 4. Wire connection of Manual Call Point

17
c). Alarm Bell
All kinds of issues can lead to the activation of a fire alarm bell—rising smoke, ambient
heat, and even water flow through the fire alarm system—but all bells ring to encourage safe and
early evacuation by a building's occupants, and proper placement is key. Alarm bells are available
in a range of brands, sizes, noise levels, and voltages. As such, these instructions may be slightly
different for your bell.

➢ Find the right height

Choose a mounting height for your bell based on your manufacturer's guidelines and ceiling
height. Various installation guides recommend a mounting height of at least 8 feet (or 2.4 meters)
from the floor and as close to the ceiling as possible.

➢ Remove the gong

Next, remove the red bowl, or gong, surrounding the inner parts. Most have a short hex
bolt or Phillips’s screw on the front of the bell near the gong's center. Loosen the bolt and gently
remove the gong.

➢ Wire the alarm bell

Next, shut off the power supply to the bell's power source. Circuit breaker switches
should be secured with appropriate lockout/tagout devices to stop other people from
accidentally reenergizing the wires you'll be working with.

Then, connect the wires in the bell to the wires in the wall. These instructions will
vary with the type of current used by the bell: alternating current (AC) fire alarm bells have
different wiring schemes than direct current (DC) bells.

Figure3. 5. D.C. Bell

18
Figure3. 6. A.C. Bell

➢ Mount the bell to the outlet box or back box

Mount your bell to a standard square outlet box or, better, a fire alarm bell back
box. Unlike standard outlet boxes, back boxes protect your alarm bell’s wiring from dirt,
dust, and debris. Wind and rain will quickly short the bell’s wiring if it isn't properly protected,
which makes back boxes especially critical if you’re mounting yours outside.

Figure3. 7. back boxes and fire bell wire guards

To install with a back box, simply fasten the included bolts in the holes that align the bell’s
housing unit with the back box. The back box’s gasket will form an air and water-tight seal.

Figure3. 8. back boxes installation with a Phillips screwdriver

19
➢ Reattach the gong (and bell guard)

Reinstall the gong. There are two holes on the gong itself – make sure they align
with the positioning pins on the bell’s housing unit and re-tighten the bolt you removed in
Step 2. This is a good time to install your wire guard, if you have one.

Figure3. 9. align the positioning pin to ensure proper installation

➢ Test the bell

test the bells to ensure that they are correctly wired and sufficiently loud. Each bell
must be audible in all areas designated.

When you done of installing, we must to check all kinds of Fire Alarm System. Make sure
they are better such as the cable is no issues.

Figure3. 10. testing cable

20
d). FACP
we need to determine the point of leg that we need to connect with cabinet Panel. Then,
equip the cabinet by attaching it with the screw that we marked the point to be attached to the
cabinet panel. After that, we equip the tools that we must to connect such as transformer, power
supply, card, and Band Bord for processing.

3.2. Maintenance

a). Smoke and Heat Detector

For smoke and heat detector, we need to maintenance many times because of our using
have long time and it has dust above detector that cannot detect when have something happen.
So, we need to check it three or four time per years or more over that we can.

b). Bell
Bell is a material for ring, here is the reason that we should make sure exactly, it is work.
For protection when the fire happened and avoid some material does not work. We need to check
three or four per years or more over.

c). Manual Call Point

For Manual Call Point, we test by push button on it for make sure the processing take a
signal to FACP that will alarm or not. And we need to check it like bell or other detectors.

d). FACP
FACP is a panel that have many buttons complicated and have different functions for
show the sign and process of testing in whole systems. One more thing, the special thing is check
the battery because it necessary to provide the power when no electricity. For maintenance is the
same to other.

IV. Conclusion

After three months of this internship, I get more knowledge about MEP fields but also
the soft skill and communication way because all the staff at this company are friendly, open-
minded and love to share their mind. Specially about ELV as FIRE ALARM SYSTEM. Make
me well known about their function, meaning in the building.

21
To sum up, this internship is really important and useful for me because give me the new
one experience for myself to be in the future. This report, go through teacher’s advice can make
me to be understanding well how to get a better report and can help me how thesis well.
