Forms quiz week 6 – Titrations quiz (answers)

1. 100 cm3 portions of ethanoic acid solution were

titrated against 0.10 mol dm-3 sodium hydroxide solution.
Titre values of 18.40, 18.50, 18.40 and 18.60 cm 3 were
recorded. What is the molar concentration of the
ethanoic acid solution?

CH3CO2H + NaOH  CH3CO2Na + H2O

Average titre = 18.48 cm3

Moles of NaOH = 18.475 cm3 / 1000 cm3 x 0.10 mol dm-3
= 1.8475 x 10-3 mol
1:1 stoichiometry, hence 1.8475 x 10-3 mol of ethanoic
acid
Conc = 1.8475 x 10-3 mol / 0.1 dm3 = 1.8 x 10-2 mol dm-3
2. Calculate the molarity of a sulphuric acid solution of
which 25 ml was neutralised by the following volumes of
0.091 M sodium hydroxide; 42.10, 41.80 and 42.30 ml?
(3 decimal places)

2NaOH + H2SO4  Na2SO4 + 2H2O

Average titre volume = (42.10 + 41.80 + 42.30) / 3

= 42.07 ml

Moles of NaOH = 0.091 x 42.07 /1000 = 3.828 x 10-3

moles

Moles of H2SO4 = 3.828 / 2 = 1.914 x 10-3 moles

Molarity of H2SO4 = 1.914 x 10-3 x 1000 / 25 = 0.077 M

3. Alkali persulphates (peroxydisulphates) can be determined by reaction with an
excess of iron(II) under acidic conditions

S2O82- + 2Fe2+ + 2H+  2Fe3+ + 2HSO4-

and the excess iron(II) determined by back titration with standardised potassium
dichromate solution in the presence of sodium diphenyl amine sulphonate as
indicator.

Cr2O72- + 6Fe2+ + 14H+  2Cr3+ + 6Fe3+ + 7H2O

A 25cm3 sample of potassium persulphate was reacted with 50cm3 of ammonium

iron(II) sulphate (0.0987 mol dm-3). Back titration of the excess iron(II) required
14.20 cm3 of 0.02 mol dm-3 potassium dichromate solution. Calculate the molarity of
the original persulphate solution.

Moles of Cr2O72- = 14.20 cm3 / 1000 x 0.02 mol dm-3 = 2.84 x 10-4 mol
Therefore moles of Fe2+ remaining = 2.84 x 10-4 mol x 6 = 1.704 x 10-3 mol

Moles of Fe2+ originally added = 0.05 dm-3 x 0.0987 mol dm-3 = 4.935 x 10-3 mol

Hence
4.935 x 10-3 mol - 1.704 x 10-3 mol = 3.321 x 10-3 mol of Fe2+ reacted with S2O82-

Moles of S2O82- = 3.321 x 10-3 / 2 = 1.6155 x 10-3 mol

There conc = 1.6155 x 10-3 mol / 25 cm3 x 1000 = 6.5 x 10-2 mol dm-3
4. Chlorate ions (ClO3-) can be reduced by warming with an excess of iron(II) under acidic
conditions:

ClO3- + 6 Fe2+ + 6 H+  Cl- + 6 Fe3+ + 3H2O

and the excess iron(II) determined by back titration with standardised

potassium dichromate solution:

Cr2O72- + 6 Fe2+ + 14 H+  2 Cr3+ + 6 Fe3+ + 7 H2O

in the presence of sodium diphenyl amine sulphonate as indicator. A 25 cm3 sample of

potassium chlorate was reacted with 50 cm3 of ammonium iron(II) sulphate (0.0973 M).
Back titration of the excess iron(II) required 11.25 cm 3 of 0.02 M potassium dichromate
solution.

Calculate the molarity of the original chlorate solution.

ClO3-

Fe2+ Excess Fe2+

Cr2O72-

Number of moles of Cr2O72- = 11.25 / 1000 x 0.02

= 2.25 x 10-4 moles Cr2O72-

Number of moles of Fe2+ added = 50 / 1000 x 0.0973

= 4.865 x 10-3 moles Fe2+

Cr2O72- + 14H+ + 6Fe2+  2Cr3+ + 7H2O

Number of moles of excess Fe2+ left over = 6 x 2.25 x 10-4

= 1.35 x 10-3 moles of Fe2+

Number of moles of Fe2+ used in the reaction with ClO3-

= (4.865 x 10-3) – (1.35 x 10-3)

= 3.515 x 10-3 moles of Fe2+

ClO3- + 6Fe2+ + 6H+  Cl- + 6Fe3+ + 3H2O

Moles of ClO3- = moles of Fe2+ / 6

= 3.515 x 10-3 / 6

= 5.858 x 10-4 moles of ClO3-

Molarity = 5.858 x 10-4 x (1000 / 25)

= 0.0234 M = mol dm-3

5. The concentration of Fe2+ in 25 cm3 portions of an unknown solution was determined
by titrimetric analysis using a standardised 0.0400 mol dm-3 potassium permanganate
(KMnO4) solution. The procedure was conducted three times and required 12.60, 12.55 and
12.55 cm3 of permanganate solution. What is the concentration of Fe2+ in the unknown
solution in g dm-3? (ram: Mn = 54.94, Fe = 55.85, H = 1.01, O = 16.00) (2 decimal places)

MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8 H+  Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

Average titre volume = (12.60 + 12.55 + 12.55) / 3 = 12.57 ml

Moles of MnO4- = 0.0400 x 12.57 /1000 = 5.027 x 10-4 moles

Moles of Fe2+ = 5.027 x 10-4 moles x 5 = 2.513 x 10-3 moles

Molarity of Fe2+ = 2.513 x 10-3 x (1000 / 25)= 0.1005 M

Fe2+ in g dm-3 = 0.1005 x 55.85 = 5.61 g dm-3.
