Demonstrate an ability to prepare and start the Steering


Gear and conduct pre-sailing checks and tests
The following Steering Gear tests and checks must be carried out within 12 hours
prior to arrival or departure, any deficiencies must be brought to the immediate
.attention of the Chief Engineer and the Bridge watch keeper

Operation of manual Steering from the Bridge using Steering motors independently, -
check for the correct position of the Rudder angle indicator relative to the actual
.position of the Rudder

.Check Steering Gear rams and also for the full movement of the Rudder -

.Check the oil level in the system-

.Check Greasing unit and lubricators-

.Check the Steering Gear unit power failure alarm-

.Visual inspection of all ram seal for oil leakage during operation -

.Visual inspection of Steering Gear and the connecting linkages-

.Check electric motor amps while motor is idling-

.Check electric motor amps during Rudder movement-

.Test the stop limit switches for operations-

.Ensure maximum permitted Rudder angle in achieved-

Operation of communications between Steering Gear compartment and the -


.Navigation Bridge

.Confirm with Bridge that Gyro repeater heading is correct -

.Bridge informed of the results of the above test and inspections-
