When synthesizing:

 You note any shared/similar issues across the articles.

Activity 1:

Read the cause and effect paragraph, then answer the questions:

Internet Addiction

Internet addiction, which was caused by many factors, has affected the society in a profound way. One of the
reasons is accessibility. Both Thomas (2014) and Shaqul (2018) report that easy access to the
internet triggers people into being constantly online. Another cause is being attractive. Social media websites are
so appealing that causes millions of individuals to lose themselves in the cyber world and neglect the real
world. According to the Tehachapi Counseling Center (2018), teens are more affected by this as 73% of American
teens aged 13-17 years have access to the internet and 56% of this age group are online several times a day.
Similarly, Thomas (2014) mentions that 40% of teens have easy access to internet those days. The most important
factor giving rise to internet addiction is individual factors. People that are shy and have problems relating have
more risk of having an addiction to the new technologies since the use of the social networks allows one to
communicate without having to interact face to face. Internet addiction can lead to many negative consequences.
First, it makes people more forgetful and impatient because it changes the brain structure (Thomas, 2014). This
is also supported by Shaqul (2018) who mentions that people lose sense of time due to being addicted to
internet. Furthermore, both authors believe that internet addiction immerses people in a cyber world isolating
them from the real world and socialization. Another critical effect is on young people. Internet addiction
contributes to sleep deprivation, social withdrawal, and poor grades. Children who are allowed unrestricted access
to the Internet can encounter harmful information that may be dangerous to their well- being creating lasting
mental and emotional effects. Last but not least, internet addicts usually suffer from diminished eyesight and back
pain as a result of being attached to it. In conclusions, internet addiction has many negative consequences on
individuals.
