REACTION TO DESIGN PROCESS:

I think this Design Process is a standard process as it starts with Empathize where the designer has to put
his/ her perspective to the user’s point of view. This start is good when designing because it will help the
designer to Define what the problem is and Ideate to start the Prototype or experimenting and Testing it to
further enhance the solution for the problem. This design process can be visualized or utilized as an
infinite loop to make sure that the solutions are perfect to the problem.

Of course, there are other design process that can be used in architecture. Another process that can be
used as an infinite loop, or even a back-and-forth process. This design process is a good as it can be done
in different ways. The process can start in defining the problem, collecting data, and/ or brainstorming.
These three starting points in this design process can go anywhere, for example, brainstorming to
collecting information to defining the problem to collect information to brainstorm to develop solutions…
and so on. The beauty of this design process is, you can solve multiple problems at once and gather as
much ideas and information as you can. Also, as this design process doesn’t end, you can get feedback to
improve and further develop your solutions, and again define the problem, gather ideas, and then
brainstorm.

The figure below will further enhance your understanding towards the second design process discussed.

“designing with art” and “designing with science” in reference to the definition of “Architecture as
both art and science of designing structures.”
Architecture is a manifestation of human’s ideas through art and science. This very definition can be
visually seen and used as it a physical manifestation. The art in architecture expresses the designers’
creativity. Because of that, it pushes the architecture’s visuals and aesthetics to its limits, injecting
emotions, responses, and ideas to the users who experience it. On the other hand, science in architecture
focuses on functionality, safety, and sustainability of the structure. The further development of technology
allows the designer to develop sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and smart buildings.
Today, architecture heavily focuses on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices with the use of
science and technology. Although science contributes more to sustainable practices, on the other hand,
arts in architecture focuses on function and inspiring spaces. Incorporating these elements to architecture
creates a balance between creativity and practicality leading to harmonious and user-friendly structure.
