Anti-Piracy Plug-In Architecture

Flexible Anti-Piracy Solutions

Right now, the protection of intellectual property is one of the hottest topics in the software
industry. With the Business Software Alliance (BSA) estimating that 25% of all business software
is illegal, resulting in losses for 1999 of $3.2 Billion, Rimage recognizes the need for strong,
effective anti-piracy measures from the CD-R community. At the same time, we recognize that
those measures must be flexible and adaptable to a variety of environments. With the
announcement of our new Anti-Piracy Plug-In Architecture, Rimage hopes to address these
issues in a powerful and meaningful way. This Plug-In Architecture will allow us to adapt to and
adopt new anti-piracy tools as they become available. This achievement empowers companies
to select the kind of protective technology that best suits their requirements. As always, we are
committed to developing new technologies to meet the growing needs of our customers.

Watermarking
As part of our Anti-Piracy Plug-In Architecture, Rimage includes a powerful watermarking solution
as a standard feature in its Producer II product lineup.

Watermarking

Rimage’s watermarking solution, called Encrypted Digital Fingerprinting (EDF), is a powerful

tool for software and data content. Other companies’ hardware dependent watermarking involves
recording a code on an unused portion of the disc not associated in any way with the data being
recorded. This enables users to copy the disc’s valuable contents without copying the
watermark. Simply using Windows Explorer to drop and drag the content from the disc, they can
leave the watermark behind.

The Rimage software driven solution embeds hundreds, even thousands, of watermarks in with
the content itself. This technology makes it highly improbable that anyone will be able to copy a
disc without the watermark being recorded along with the data. These watermarks are highly
encrypted, transparent codes that are extremely difficult to locate, remove, decrypt or counterfeit.
So, even copies of pirated discs are marked and easily traceable.

The Rimage EDF solution is not hardware dependent, but built right into our software platform. It
is available as a user selectable feature in our Workstation software, which, when enabled,
prompts the user to supply a serial number that is then encrypted and embedded in the
watermarks with a time and date stamp. This technology can also be used as a database driven
application, which enables the user to feed a unique watermark to each copied disc, making it
possible to trace a pirated disc back to its original source.

The Future of Anti-Piracy
Rimage is actively seeking partnerships to bring powerful true CD-R based copy protection
schemes to market.

The Rimage Anti-Piracy Plug-in Architecture was created with the idea that just as technology
advances, the illegal use of technology will advance with it. Therefore, the most important part of
any anti-piracy program is its ability to be flexible, to move with the times, and to always stay two
steps ahead of the hackers. We hope to partner with anti-piracy providers to introduce more
alternatives in the future. As always, these measures reflect our commitment to offering the best
possible solutions.
