The Crow and the Pitcher

One day, a thirsty crow wanted some water to drink. He
looked and looked for a well. He could not find any. Then he saw a
pitcher on the road. There was some water at the bottom of the
pitcher. He could not reach the water. He sat down to think. He
thought and thought. He saw some small stones beside the road. He
smiled and said, “I know what to do.” He got the stones one by one.
He dropped them into the pitcher. With each stone that he dropped,
the water rose a little higher. Soon the water reached the brim or top
of the pitcher. He drank all the water he wanted.

I Can Connect

Before we explore more about this module, let us have a quick review on the topic
you previously learned. Can you still remember the topic on using resources such as
dictionary, thesaurus, online resource to find the meaning of words?

How are you going to use a dictionary? How

about a thesaurus?
Dictionaries and Thesaurus are reference books for words.

A dictionary contains alphabetical lists of words that

includes the meaning, etymology, pronunciation and explains
the meaning of a word and shows how it is spelled and used.

A thesaurus, like the dictionary, it does the same which

also contains synonyms and even antonyms.

I Can Learn
A learner should know what kind of text he or she is reading. It is for the reason that
texts are different from one another. Knowing the characteristics of a text helps learners
understand the reading material.

In this module, you will study again the two types of texts- literary and informational.
Along with that, this module will teach you how to answer comprehension questions that
are made based on the text type.
Enjoy while learning this module!

Let’s have a brain teaser:

Write each given kind of text in the correct group- literary or informational.
Use the table for your answer. (Check your answers later after learning the whole module).

LITERARY INFORMATIONAL

Based on the groupings, what is the difference between a literary text and an
informational text?

Read the story below:

Philippine Heroes
During their time, Rizal and Bonifacio did good thing to the Filipinos and
for our country. They are heroes. Our heroes were little children like you once
upon a time.
When Andres was a little boy his parents died so he took care of his
younger brother and sisters. Andres worked very hard to earn a living. He made
paper fans and carved toys from wood. He sold them along the streets. He also
ran errands for others.
As a little boy, Jose Rizal used his time wisely. He read a lot of books. He
drew hand-painted pictures. He molded figures out of clay. He carved things
from wood. He also wrote poems, stories and plays.

This is a literary text. Observe the kind of questions asked for a literary text.

 What was the story about?

 Who are the characters in the story?
 Why did Andres Bonifacio take care of his younger brother and sisters? It is
so because his parents ____________________
 How did Jose Rizal use his time wisely? A. He read a lot of books.
 Why did Dr. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio become Philippine Heroes?
 The text given is ______________________
 Do you also like to be a hero? Why? Explain your answer.

Usually, a literary text, like the biography you just have read,
has setting, characters, plot or sequence of events, and ending,
leaving its readers moral or lesson in life.

The next is a sample of an informational text. Like what

you did on the first text, observe closely how questions are made.

4
Read this text:
p
The earth experiences global warming which causes climate change. Water
and air are becoming polluted and these affect the lives of all creatures. As a result,
everyone is alarmed of possible problems which could happen in the near future.

 The text is simply about _____________________.

 Water and air pollution affect the lives of ________________.
 Based on the text, how does everyone feel about the possible
 problems that global warming might bring out? ________________.
 The structure of the text is __________________.
As you have noticed, the kind of question here is different from that of the literary
text. There is no question about characters, setting or plot.

For you to understand more of the lesson, here is a summary of the discussion.
