failure, we will need to calculate the allowable bending stress of the plate.
Given:
Load applied to the plate (P) = 62 tons = 124,000 lbs = 553,378.5 Newtons
The formula to calculate the maximum bending stress in a rectangular plate is as follows:
σ = M*c / I
where: σ = maximum bending stress M = bending moment c = distance from the neutral axis to the
extreme fiber I = moment of inertia
M=P*l/4
Assuming the plate is a square (3 meters by 3 meters), the length (l) will be equal to 3 meters.
M = 553,378.5 * 3 / 4 M = 415,033.875 Nm
Next, we need to calculate the distance from the neutral axis to the extreme fiber (c) using the
formula:
The allowable bending stress for ASTM A572 Grade 60 steel is typically around 250 MPa. Since the
calculated bending stress of 109 MPa is lower than the allowable stress, the plate should be able
to safely transfer the load of 62 tons to the soil without failure.
