Health/Illness

Coping with Present Health Issues

i:
1. The probability of health problems is a part of this present earthly
life.
2 Corinthians 5:4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are
c
burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed
with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed
up by life. [Metaphor concerning the frailty of this earthly body
I::
and the longing for immortality]

2. Ingredients that improve health are:

I;::
Proverbs 14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy
rots the bones. ;;:
Proverbs 18:14 A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a
crushed spirit who can bear?
Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed
a;:
spirit dries up the bones.

3. We do not walk through health problems alone.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet allyour needs according
to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. J;:

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though

~ outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed
day by day.

~ 4. Whether or not a present illness mayor may not lead to death, we

need to bring glory to God through it.
Psalm 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might
:= learn your decrees.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient

for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I
:= will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's
power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in
weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.
:= For when I am weak, then I am strong.
1 Peter 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little
:= while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These
have come so that your faith-of greater worth than gold, which
perishes even though refined by fire-may be proved genuine and
:= may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

5. God provides strength.

:I 2 Samuel 22:33 It is God who arms me with strength and makes
my way perfect.

;; Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the
strength of my heart and my portion forever.
2 Corinthians 4:7-9 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to
;; show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but
not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but
:; not destroyed.
Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his

;; wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and
rampart.

Isaiah 40:30-31 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young
;; men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew

their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run
and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. I::
6. Illness, as a trial, develops character.
James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
r=
I
develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that
you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. I:
Job 23:8-10 But if! go to the east, he is not there; if! go to the
west, I do not find him. When he is at work in the north, I do not
see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him. But I:
he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come
forth as gold.

Fear of Health Problems

1. Do not place confidence in self-avoid evil.

;:
Proverbs 3:7-8 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD
and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment r:
to your bones.

2. Final future hope of freedom from pain and illness. I:::

Revelation 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There
will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old
order of things has passed away. I::
Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we
III eagerly await a Savior from there, the LordJesus Christ, who, by
the power that enables him to bring everything under his control,
I:
will transform our lowlybodies so that they will be like his glorious
body. I:
