Tutorial Activity 4B

Task 1: You are going to start by imagining the independent and dependent variables in an
experimental design. (Recall, in true experiments your data sources have to be able to be
randomly assigned to the attributes of your independent variable.) Start by picking any
dependent variable you like, and then identify an independent variable that could be measured
dichotomously in an experiment as influencing this dependent variable.

(IV) did they study?  (DV) how did the class of soci 210 do on their
midterms?
(Attribute 1) ________yes____________
(Attribute 2) _________no___________

Follow-up task: Expand the relationship you imagined above by including a second independent
variable that you can’t randomly assign participants to. Your new independent variable can have
as many attributes as you need.

(IV) _____mental health status_______________

(1) ______depressed______________
(2) _______anxious_____________
(3) ________energized____________
(4) ____mood swings________________
(5) _______memory and intelligence_____________

Create a research question that includes all three of the variables identified above to describe the
relationship explored…
