Foreword

This is a translation of al-Arbaʿūn al-Ramaḍāniyyah of

Mufti Muḥammad Ṭāhā Karaan. It comprises 40 hadith,
extracted from 40 distinct books, on the month of Ramaḍān,
fasting and the day of Eid.

The original work was dictated by Mufti Ṭāhā to his

students in the Ramaḍān of 2014. In it, he presents his
entire asānīd – chains of transmission – via 20 teachers,
from himself to the author of each book, and subsequently
to the Prophet . I have excluded the transmission
chains as its reading will be tedious for the laity; and this
translation is intended for laypeople.

I have also left out the hadith references since they are
recorded in the original Arabic work.

Amongst the Cape’s rich Islamic history and heritage, Mufti

Taha Karan is recognised as the first Capetonian scholar to
compile a work in the 40-hadith genre.

Hadith 1 – from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
The Messenger of Allah  said:
“Allah says: ‘every deed of the son of Adam is for him,
except for fasting, which is for Me, and I will reward him
for it.’ Fasting is a shield. So on a day when anyone of you is
fasting, then he should neither indulge in obscene language
nor should he raise his voice. If anyone insults him or
argues with him, then he should say: ‘I am fasting.’ By Him
in Whose Hand the soul of Muḥammad is, the breath of
the fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of
musk. The one who fasts, experiences two joys: he feels joy
when he breaks the fast; and he is joyful by virtue of his fast
when he meets his Master.”

Hadith 2 – from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim

The Messenger of Allah  said:

“In Paradise there is certainly a gate named Rayyān. On
the Day of Resurrection those who have fasted will enter
by this gate; nobody else will enter with them. It will be
announced: ‘Where are those who have fasted?’ They will
then enter through this gate and once the last of them have
entered, the gate will be locked and nobody else will enter
through it thereafter.”

Hadith 3 – from Sunan Abū Dāwūd
The Messenger of Allah  said:
“Whoever does not give up lies and false conduct, then
Allah has no need that he abstains from his food and his
drink.”

Hadith 4 – from Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī

The Messenger of Allah  said:
“When the first night of Ramaḍān comes, the satans and
mischievous jinns are chained up. The gates of the Fire
are closed, and none of its gates are opened. The gates of
Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed. And a
caller announces: ‘O seeker of good, come closer! O seeker
of evil, stop!’ And Allah has people whom He frees from
the Fire; that occurs every night.”

Hadith 5 – from Sunan al-Nasāʾī

The Messenger of  was the most generous of people, and
he was the most generous during the month of Ramaḍān
when he met with Jibrīl. Jibrīl met him every night during
the month of Ramaḍān and he revised the Qurʾān with
him. During this period when the Messenger of Allah 
met Jibrīl, he was most generous with good (deeds) than
sent winds (with showering rain).

The Messenger of Allah  said:
“An umrah during Ramaḍān equals a ḥajj.”

Hadith 11 – from Sunan al-Shāfiʿī

The Messenger of Allah  observed continuous fast, so
they (the Companions j) also started observing continuous
fast. When this reached the Messenger of Allah , he said:
“Had the month been lengthened for me, I would have
continued observing continuous fast, so that those who act
with forced hardness would abandon their exaggeration.
I am not like you, my Master feeds me and provides me

Hadith 12 – from Sunan al-Dārimī

The Messenger of Allah  said:
“Whoever breaks the fast one day of the month of Ramaḍān
without an allowance or illness, then if he fasted for all of
time, the fasting for all of time would not make up for it.”

Hadith 13 – from Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah

The Messenger of Allah  said:
“Fasting is not (merely) abstaining from food and drink.
Rather, fasting is leaving idle talk and obscene speech. And
if anyone insults you or behaves foolishly towards you,
then say: ‘I am fasting. I am fasting.’”

Hadith 18 – from Sunan al-Kubrā of al-Bayhaqī
The Messenger of Allah  said:
“Whoever does not resolve his intention for fasting before
dawn, then there is no fasting for him (on that day).”

Hadith 19 – from Maʿrifat al-Sunan wa al-Ā thār of al-Bayhaqī

Thaʿlabah ibn Abī Mālik al-Quraṭḥī h said:

“The Messenger of Allah  went out one night in Ramaḍān
and saw people performing ṣalāh to one side of the
mosque. He then asked: ‘What are they doing?’ Someone
replied: ‘O Messenger of Allah, they are people who have
not memorised the Qurʾān. Ubayy ibn Kaʿb is reciting (for

Salmān al-Fārisī h reported: “the Messenger of Allah 

‘O people, a great and blessed month has cast its shadow

over you. It is a month in which there is a night that is

It is a month of patience; and the reward for patience is

Whomsoever feeds a fasting person in it, it will cause the
forgiveness of his sins and emancipation from the Hellfire;

without any decrease in his reward.’

Thereupon we said: O Messenger of Allah, not all of us are
