HOMEWORK 1.1: HISTORY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY:

History of Science

⁎ Science is a body of knowledge. It is also a study of the nature and behavior of natural things
and the knowledge that we obtain about them. Founded by the Royal Society with a motto of
“Nullius in Verba” which means no one’s word. It is a place where they debate on some new
ideas that members demonstrated their experiments in front of their colleague witnessing as
proofs. It also tells that we don’t have to believe if its just someone tell something to you rather
look for some proofs and explore beyond. The early scientist who adopted the nullius in verta
are not really scientist rather they are alchemist and medical doctors, people who loved truths
concerning the world around them. History of Science is a diverse and changing nature of the
never ending human search for truth.

History of Technology

⁎ The definition of technology is science or knowledge put into practical use to solve problems or
invent useful tools. In the history of technology, upon watching the given videos, it is stated that
even in the earliest period people to used technology. From its pre-history, stone age, it is the
period where people do have limited tools in daily survival. They develop the stone tools in which
they used it in hunting and preparing foods. The earliest evidence of the use of stone is the great
rift valley in Ethiopia. Paleolithic or The Old stone Age, it is when stone tools became their
primary tools and agriculture has been developed. They used it in chopping and scrapping. As
agriculture has developed, they used these stones in farming, planting and harvesting. Neolithic
Period, The last portion of Stone Age. The start of Copper and Bronze Age, were agriculture and
metal smelting were developed, first introduce the copper followed by the bronze. After copper
and bronze age, here comes the iron age. In this period tools of bronze were replaced by another
metal which is stronger compared to bronze and a lot cheaper. Part of the Iron age is the Eurasian
Culture, developed the writing systems. Next is the Ancient Development. Egyptians has great
work in ancient development. They used number of simple machines such as ramps in
constructions. After the Egyptians are Ancient India who developed forefront and seafaring
technology. It is also the development of early construction and architecture.
Mesopotamians, after the Ancient India, who invented the wheels. The main components of their
constructions are mud, bricks and stones. They are also advanced in water systems,
transportation, irrigation and catchment systems. Last but now the least they invented the
earliest form of writing system, the Cuneiform Script. Jerwan Aqueduct is the biggest proof of
their technological advancements crafted with stone arches and waterproofed with concrete.
Next are the Chinese, one of the most advanced in technology. Some of them are compass,
propeller, crossbow, etc. Chinese invented the gunpowder which is used as solid fuel for rockets.

The Romans, they implemented law of ownership, advanced stone masonry and road building
technology, military and civil engineering, spinning and weaving machine. The Roman Empire
with used of concrete, glass blowing and books is the most important in the field of technologies
and innovations. It is because it was located on volcanic peninsula where areas are full of sand
and suitable for crystalline grains. Next in line are the Inca and Mayan. These are famous for
ancient engineering because it matches the engineering of the present. They are inventors of
hydroponics, good in weighing and stone works and in agricultural technology. The Greeks who
improve the developments. Medieval to Early Modern Technology were Islamic World, Medieval
Europe, Renaissance Technology, Age of Exploration and Industrial Revolution, improves the said
technologies invented before them. Some of them are mechanical clocks and vertical windmills,
military technology development, agricultural advances, First European papermill in Sicily, Olive
Screw press, new Atlantis, concept of the civil codes, Coal and High-pressure engines. The 19 th
century technology witnessed the developments in the fields of construction, manufacturing and
communication technologies. The first purpose railway was made by Liverpool and Manchester in
1830. Telegraphy is also invented. Standard American system of manufacturing and US federal
arsenals firearms manufacturing system. In ending of 19th century there are major rapids
developed in various field of production such as chemical, electrical, petroleum and steel. In the
20th century many more inventions have been made by some people have made the technology
more advanced or turn into modern technology which includes the foundation of the camera,
GPS, the internet etc. With these technologies we also reach the outer space with the launching
of Sputnik - spacecraft. Upon entering the 21st century modern technologies are much more
advanced which make works easier than before.

The Science, Technology, History, & Society

⁎ History of Science, Technology in the Society are related to each other. Day by day from the beginning,
these three are connected with each other. Since the beginning from the foundation of science,
technology is also present as well as the society. People search and explore more to be able to search
for the truth. As we improved into the modern technology, human behavior also changes where people
mind has more on exploration, questions that needs more explanations. The behavior of the society is
based on humanity’s behavior because not all of them have the same attitude. In our everyday life, we
still do many questions that needs answers that why we keep on searching and exploring as well as
science and technology, everyday it changes, new development has been found that will make our lives
more easier to survive.
