C: LESSON OBJECTIVES
1. KNOWLEDGE

 Learners should be able to define the term mining and other terms that are found in the
whole topic of the mineral revolution in South Africa.
 Learners should be able to critically discuss the start of mineral revolution in South
Africa.
 Learners should be able to explain that, during the mineral revolution in South Africa
what happened to people and how did they get the job opportunities.
2. SKILLS
 Learners should be able to analyse the mineral revolution on the workers side, for
example the way workers were treated. They should be able to state whether they
were treated equal or not.
 Learners should be able to state the reasons that made the superior to introduce the
various schemes to keep workers on site.
 Learners should be to identify the indications of racism that occurred on the working
site while the digging of minerals take place.

3. VALUES/ATTITUDES
 Learners will gain the understanding on how the racism took place on workers.
 Learners will be familiar with the important of the diamonds including golds and know
how these items processed from raw material into a product that can be sold.
 Learners will know the machines that were used to extract the minerals also know that
there were workers who were using their hands to dig mines.

F: LESSON PHASES:
1. INTRODUCTION
The teacher will display a picture of excavation land in the data projector, where there were
minerals and will also show a picture of gold. After the displaying of pictures, the teacher will
ask question based on the pictures to discover the background knowledge of learners about
minerals and mining. He or she will guide them by providing corrects answers if their answers
are wrong.
EXCAVATED LAND. GOLD.

1. What is excavated land and how is the land end up like this?
 Excavated land is the land that have big holes because of the mining that occurred
on it.
2. What is mineral?
 The minerals are the findings that are found underground like Gold, coal, and
diamonds

2. DEVELOPMENT
STEP 1

The teacher will present two maps on the projector that will show where the South Africa is
situated and other one will show where the first places are, where a discover of diamond and
gold begun.

1. Where is the South Africa situated in the African map?


 The South Africa is situated in Southern Africa.
2. Name the first city where the discovery of diamond begun?
 The first is Kimberley

STEP 2

The teacher will explain the way black workers were treated in the sites while they were
working and the dispossession of lands including the defeat of African kingdom: Xhosa !878
and Pedi and Zulu 1879.

Key Topic: Britain, diamond mining and increasing labour control and land
expansionism.

The teacher will explain the following using the textbook and notes written on the chalk board.

 When Africans went to work in the diamond mines they were not 'free' wage
labourers.
 The black people social responsibilities denied them the freedom to dispose of their
labour as individuals.
 After diamonds and gold were discovered, the black people areas were taken over
by the British.
 By 1902, the Boer areas were also under British control.

The following question will be asked to ensure whether learners are following the lesson or
not.
1. Where is the South Africa situated?
2. Name the first city where the discovery of diamond begun?
3. What were the reasons of African to be not free when went to work in the diamond
mines?
4. Why were the black people areas and Boers taken over by the British?

STEP 3

The teacher will take learners to the computer LAN where they will have an access on the
you tube and internet. The relevant videos will be played to make learners understand well
the mineral revolution in South Africa. The videos will be about the following:
 How gold is mined.
 Conditions underground.
 Skilled and unskilled white workers.
 Mine-owners then tried using unskilled white labour, but the skilled miners were
against this plan.

STEP 4

The teacher will take learners to the field in the school yard to access them by asking them
one by one to see whether they understood the lesson in the classroom. This will be done
because of the high number of learners and that can help them to refresh their blood and
minds.

3. CONSOLIDATION/LESSON CONCLUSION
The lesson will conclude with question-and-answer approach. The teacher will ask the
learners to tell where they did not understand, and where they think understood better. If they
say they understood they will be given opportunity to explain for the whole class, if they did
not understand, the teacher will there for explain again. The following question will be asked
to check what learners understood?
