Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) 5500
Pharmacy 5396

There are many allied health professionals that you will collaborate with to provide care for your patient.
They include registered respiratory therapists, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists
and part time unit assistants.
It is important to communicate your learning needs to your mentor and the clinical educator. You will be
experiencing many new and unfamiliar responsibilities, situations and personal reactions as well as
further developing your critical thinking skills. It is challenging to transition to a specialty area of
practice even if you have many years of nursing experience. Ask questions and use the knowledge of
your mentor to help ease your transition to the unit. Reach out to the manager and educator if you feel
that you need further support.
There is an assigned additional resource (AR) nurse for every shift. Utilize them if needing assistance
and manager, supervisor, or clinical educator is not available. You may find that the AR will intervene or
give you suggestions about your patient care from time to time. View it as a learning opportunity since
the AR may have noticed an important detail based on their experience and knowledge level.
Orientation Schedule
Benner’s 5 Levels of Nursing Skill Development
It is important to keep the Benner’s 5 levels of Nursing Skill Development in mind when transitioning to
a new area of clinical practice. Be patient with yourself as you adapt to your new work environment and
continue to expand your clinical knowledge.
Skill and Knowledge Checklist
The Skill and Knowledge Checklist is a self-assessment tool designed to guide you and your mentor to
identify existing skill and knowledge and areas for ongoing learning opportunities. It is not expected that
you will complete everything on the checklist during your mentored shifts rather that you continue to use
it to further your nursing knowledge and skills in the beginning of your nursing career.
