THREE MOMENT EQUATION Situation 1. For the figure shown below,

Calculate the following:
The three-moment equation gives us the relation
between the moments between any three points in a
beam and their relative vertical distances or deviations.
This method is widely used in finding the reactions in a
continuous beam.

IF E IS CONSTANT:
1. What is the moment at A?
2. What is the vertical reaction at C

Situation 2. A 12-m simply supported beam is

IF E AND I ARE CONSTANT: loaded with a uniform load of 21 kN/m all
throughout the length.

3. To prevent excessive deflection, a roller is

IF E AND I ARE CONSTANT WITH UNSETTLING added at midspan. What is the reaction at the
SUPPORTS:
added roller?
4. What is the moment at the interior support?
5. What are the vertical reactions at the left and
right support?

Situation 3. A 8-m cantilever carries a triangular

load that varies 15 kN/m at the fixed support
to zero at the free end. Consider EI is constant.
Using Three Moment Equation,

6. Determine the deflection at the free end?

7. If propped at the free end, what is the moment
at the fixed support?
